Shay-J:  In an era where rappers live fabricated lifestyles to appease those who are far more concerned with swag, West Palm Beach rapper Shay J, is a breath of fresh air. Beginning his journey in hip-hop at the young age of 11, Shay J first found his love for rap music. Throughout his life he was heavily influenced by it. His older brother was well known as a rapper in his school, which caused Shay J to be overshadowed and often dubbed as “Kario’s little brother”. During the early stages of his artistic development, Shay J was heavily influenced by southern rap, taking notes from notable rappers such as 8Ball & MJG, The Geto Boys, and artists from both Cash Money and Rap-A-Lot Records. However, at the time it was still just a hobby and another way to get attention. It was not until Shay J reached the age of 17 that he started to take his music seriously. He formed a rap group in high school and also met his mentor/producer Menifaces through a childhood friend. Menifaces began to expand Shay J’s mind beyond the south and introduced him to the music of Pharcyde, J Dilla, Slum Village as well as many other hip-hop grounds from different regions. Now with a few projects under his belt, and Shay J has shared stages with the likes of Common, Kid Cudi, and Inspectah Deck of the Wu Tang-Clan. With many years ahead of him, Shay J hopes to be one of hip-hop’s elite artists. – “Written by Richard Pierre”.
