Jay Stubbs – Q&A Interview

JayStubbs

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

My name is Jay Stubbs and I’m from Corona CA. Music has always been a part of my life. My mother is a singer/songwriter. A couple of years ago, music became my 24/7 job. I became entrenched in developing a unique sound by remaining true to myself.

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

I’ve always had a love of music. Believe it or not I started out doing parodies with my college roommate who was from Korea. We did songs, music videos..  I’m a silly guy, definitely don’t take myself too seriously. Since everyone on campus took a liking to it, I continued to do them and eventually, one thing led to another and here I am.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

I have eclectic taste. I find it exciting to infuse all genres of music. What separates me from other MC’s? My verrrssaaaattilllityyyyy (versatility). Remember now, Hip-Hop was the last genre that I took a liking to. So before that, it was Oldies, Pop, Rock&Roll, R&B, and Alternative, mixed in with some Showtunes lol.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

I would like to collab with Mac Miller because much of his content is relative to our daily lives, Kendrick because he’s refreshing, Tyga since we’re along the same lines when it comes to our beat selection and subject matter when doing ratchet music, Odd Future for their creativity and because they’re kinda weird and lastly Jay-Z because he’s the artist who ushered me into Hip-Hop. That’s just a list of notables though. I’m open to collaborating with anybody really. If it’s good music and we sound good together on the track then I’m all for it. And I say anybody because there are a lot of talented artists out there who get looked over for whatever reasons. I used to be that guy, and in my eyes, I will always be that guy. It keeps me humble. I don’t care if it’s Jay-Z or some person I meet at 7-Eleven. Good music is good music.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Underground hip-hop is music that flies under the radar.  Many underground artists do not have the financial capital allowing marketing and distribution. Their music is sometimes unique and different to the point where record labels do not want to take the risk.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?

I hate to beat a dead horse but my influences go back to my roots. Working out of my in-home studio, I do my own production. My influences come from that which I grew up with, which are all styles of music.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

Currently I have a single on iTunes “She Loves Me.” This summer of 2014, I will be releasing my #HellYeaITsSummer mix-tape followed by my debut album release, late 2014, early 2015.

Any shout outs?

I gotta shout out God 1st. Shouts out to God for putting the unwavering belief and confidence in my mind and my heart. Shouts out to UGHH for being the voice for the up and coming. Shouts out to my parents for exposing me to music all across the board, and a special shout out to my mom for her wisdom. #HamSeason
