Durdy (Mississauga, ON) – Q&A Interview

Durdy

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

I was born in Toronto and raised in Meadowvale, Mississauga Ontario. I call it Slumville because of its rugged look and bad behaviour that impacts the town. But its what got me into expressing myself with what I’ve been through there, so its all good in my corner.
Ive been doin’ hip hop for about 12 years now. Used to skip school just to come home and write. i usually wrote my rhymes in class but ended up getting told to focus my head on my school work instead haha.

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

Everyday life influences me into making hip hop. Ive been through hell and back and every moment from just bein’ at the park drinkin’ with my boys to dealing with stressful situations, i paint the pictures of it adding a twist.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

Describing my music i would say its very dark at times, poet, raw, mind twisting but can be very smooth, thoughtful and meaningful. Im very versatile and passionate and can do many styles from goin’ quick to slower hard hitting bars. Lots of punchlines. So come’on Bring it! haha

And what separates me from other MC’s is that i sometimes just make up stories other than tell my stories. If you check the track i did called “My Girlfriend” on youtube its a story i made up. Kinda like writing a short novel for your ears. i like doin’ that type of shit. Theres always someone out there who can relate to the story. Being creative is very important in my music.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

I’ve recently collaborated with Styles P, Havoc of Mobb Deep, and Planetary of Outerspace. Those are more of the bigger heads in hip hop I’ve done work with but I’ve worked with plenty of local emcees and producers.
Ive done shows with Slaughterhouse, R.A. the Rugged Man, Killah Priest, Joel ortiz and Freeway.

Producer wise my recent project was with Chu Beats. He produces for Dope DOD and other cats in the game right now goin’ big. Shout outs to Chu!

I would love to collaborate with too many emcees to name right now aha.
But if i had to say it would be Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Vinnie paz, Black Thought, Nas and Cage. Those are the cats i grew up listening to Mostly that inspired me a lot.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Well considering i think the new “Hip hop” out there is all garbage, underground hip hop is now the original sound. All the shit you heard in the 90’s was the real deal and the artists who still make that type of noise is now considered underground hip hop in my opinion. At least is still being put out there. Someone like me i think is keeping real hip hop alive.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production?  And who would you like to work with?

My influences production wise are producers like Stoupe of Jedi Mind Tricks, Chemo (UK scene) and Araab Muzik. Theres plenty of others i’d love to work with. There all crazy with it and there style in beats is all me.

I do a lot of work with Vokab Beats. He’s a good homie of mine and he’s the one who sold me my first legit beat to go off on. He’s doin’ his thing right now producing for a lot of big artists. You can check his page of youtube just type his name in. Shout outs to Vokab.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

I am Promoting a couple tapes right now. One is my newest album I’m working on called “90” all Produced by Neckclippa beats. His style is very 90s feel so thats why I’m calling the album “90” considering the 90’s was a huge time for hip hop and my wordplay and style matches all that. “90” will be free online for everyone to download.

Also I’m working on another album “Dark Skyz” with a lot of Production by Vokab beats. This album will be very dark and put your eyes in my sockets for an hour. you’ll hear everything from daily struggles to me just ripping apart beats with creativity and rawness. “Dark Skyz” will be pressed and sold, also online (iTunes, amazon and more)

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of One Way Ticket? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Album Art Cover.

“One Way Ticket” was my very first album that was mastered and recorded at a professional studio. I recorded it at Metal Works Studios in Mississauga. I had the same engineer Drake had and he’s very talented and easy to work with. I put tons of work into the “One Way Ticket” album. Theres a song i wrote for my 6 year old daughter on there. A song about a girl bein’ similar to a drug to me. but yea JUST GO BUY IT AND LISTEN!!!!

It features Styles P, Havoc of Mobb Deep and more. You can purchase that on iTunes, Amazon ect.

My album art i wanted to keep basic and simple. One way ticket resembles me chasing my dream and only having one ticket to get where i want to which is success in the rap game. Did the shoot on a set of train tracks to put the image out a little more clear if ya don’t get it lol.

Where can we find your music and info?

You can find my music on iTunes, google music, amazon ect. (ONE WAY TICKET ALBUM). Datpiff which has an older mixtape called “The Young & the Wreckless” featuring various artists and myself.
