Dubby – Q&A Interview

dubbyofteamloko

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

Well, my real name is Caleb Joyce and I was born in the small town of Gettysburg, Pa.  I began writing music when I was in the 4th grade.  It was mostly new age rock, like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park.  It slowly transferred into hip-hop as I was constantly hanging around people who only listened to rap music.  I just graduated college so it has been about 13 years, roughly.

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

My biggest influence in hip-hop is Lil Wayne.  The old Lil Wayne.  The Drought 3, Carter II Lil Wayne.  I always found myself getting into writers blocks and thinking to myself, “how would Wayne make this shit pop?”  He definitely inspired my generation of artists.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

I think that I bring an initial 4 components that allow me to stand out.  Bars, catchy hooks, catchy beats, and good singing.  You can’t find artists with all four of those now-a-days.  It’s usually one or the other.  I also have a lot of pop and rock background so I incorporate that style in a lot of my hooks.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

I have a collab underway with King Los who was recently signed to Bad Boy.  He is one of my favorite artists to date so it was pretty cool when his management agreed to the collab.  Most of my other collabs have been with artists in Pa such as Tay Marie out of Philly and Cal Mobley out of DC.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Hmmmm…. Every hip-hop artist that isn’t mainstream hip-hop?  It is hard to say.  When you think of Underground, you think of artists like Jedi Mind Tricks and MF Doom, but in today’s culture, there are a lot more “college” rappers that can be considered underground as well.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production?  And who would you like to work with?

If this is refereeing to beats, I don’t make my own beats.  I usually get beats from producers such a scene that I don’t focus too much on.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

Right now I still haven’t found a title for my EP, I guess it just needs to come to me.  I have so many songs on the back burner and a lot of music videos on the way.  I’ll be dropping “The Archive II” soon which is a tape I drop with a couple unreleased songs and songs I’ve gotten to collab on.  I’ll have to hit you guys up when I figure out that title, though.

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of “The Room” Music Video?

I basically was low on money and wanted a high quality, but low-budget music video at the time so I wrote a song that allowed the entire video to be shot in one room.  I just wanted to get creative with my everyday process of writing and working within the confines of my bed room.

Where can we find your music and info?

I have a soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/dubbyofteamloko) and of course my youtube channel from the video link.  You can also become a fan on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/DubbyOfTeamLoko) .

Any shout outs?

S/O to my dude Jason Shaffer at Full Tilt Productions for making me sound crispy as usual.  Cal Mobley, my bro from DC is about to drop his 2nd coming tape called “Neighborhood Nostalgia” so be on the lookout.  S/O to Gettysburg and the people who support the Team Loko movement.
