Johnny Petrop x EQ Lyrics x Champ Beatz – “Tacos & Liquor” EP (Review)

For Hip-Hop, Summertime is the perfect time to release new music. Capitalizing on the season, Out of Queens, New York, recording artists Johnny Petrop, EQ Lyrics, and Champ Beatz come together to release their new EP, titled, ‘Tacos & Liquor’.

The six-track EP is a thrilling-seeking neutral playground for the three solo acts as they combine their talents and bring together the respective fan bases to produce their best work to-date. Known for their pratical jokes on previous efforts, the three further indulge in hilarious antics as they bounce off one another with their own blend of comedic rhymeslaying.

Playful from the beginning to the end, EQ and Johnny are a couple of pratical jokers throughout the entire project. Their lyrics could use a bit more work with a well balance quantity of humor and talent. Seeking more laughs than appreciation, both lose listeners constantly with effortless verses that deserve a tomato. It needs to be addressed that there is a time to play and a time to be serious.

Champ Beatz shines bright on the EP with stellar productions. Saving the project’s quality like Superman saving Metropolis with hard-hitting boom boom bap that distracts from the lackluster lyricism. However, while Champ saves tracks like “Wave Riderz” and “Can’t Take Mine”, he can’t save every track from danger like the horrific opener “Ramen” or the least favorite, “Cookin”.

Petrop and the crew’s EP is formiable production wise, free spirited, and generous. However, with lazy wordplay from top-to-bottom, overall the project just isn’t working out for fans. Too experimental with all three factors testing out variety of new installments from verses to production. While that is what an EP is for, the project should have direction and not flying off the rails with random one-shots on all six tracks.
