Reggie Rare – “July” EP (Review)

The 90s has a nostalgia it that is often attempted at being recreated by today’s Hip-Hop but fails miserably. However, when done right, it’s unforgettable. L.A.’s top prospect Reggie Rare infuses the familiar 90s sound to his body of work and created a buzz surrounded around the release of his new EP, ‘July’. The new EP is Reggie’s best work to-date with the buzzworthy tracks, jazzy vibe, and overall impressive collective.

‘July’ production is enjoyably groovy with its eclectic Jazz production. In its entirety, the heavy Jazz influence on throughout the EP made for the project’s best accomplishments. Superior tailoring for Reggie’s conscious lyricism, a perfect fit could best describe the production. Giving listeners from that golden era a refreshing trip down memory lane that will be replayed all summer long or until the next project.

Reggie Rare lyricism is formidable but is unable to fall to the mercy of the production and recreate that same gold on the track. Swerving in and out of the lanes paved by the beat, Reggie drops some noteworthy lines but the chemistry between the two foundations are unable to synch into one. Rare needs to surrender to the beat and allow it to guide him like most of today’s mainstream greats. Once he figures out that formula, there will be nothing to stop his rise to the upper echelon.

Reggie’s production may be vibrant and consistent; however, his lyricism stumbles on tracks where he tries to speak the language of love on tracks like “Hurtful”. Catching himself, Reggie bounces back with “Catch Me Smokin'” but appears to gas out once again with a lackluster finale in “Loves Not Fun Anymore Part 1”. Clueless in the love department, the sound on the two tracks are out of pocket, out of synch, and easily recognizable as out of his element.
