Q&A With Rising Topeka, KS Based Hip Hop Artist SCRIBEMECCA

WOW! What an amazing fresh album you have to showcase to all of us SCRIBEMECCA, really refreshing to know we have true up and comers in the game today holding the Hip Hop torch really high! For the music junkies who don’t know who you are, let them know? Where are you from? How did you become a Hip Hop artist?

I’m from Top city- Topeka Ks. I’ve been moving around to MO, FL, TX and started performing in WA. My older brother used to rap and I picked it up from him beat boxing and free styling. My homies in Texas got me in the studio, w my homie Donte shout out to D from day 1. I been free styling forever but that studio session is when I started working seriously. It was trash too, garbage mixtape.

Where does your artist name SCRIBEMECCA derive from?

God Scribe – Metatron – Mecca Scribe, I was looking for a name that was easy to grasp. At that time in my career I was transitioning out of more boom bap focused songs and began writing to everything. I was featuring with live bands Coma Figura, The Gravities, and backing up Yodi Mac live. It derived from me working on attacking any beat or style, as well as searching for identity.

We recently conducted a review on your new album “Yungpatronus : Dedication to DJ Grumble“, and Kevin, one of our main contributors absolutely loved the album! He even gave it an 8 out of 10! Please give us a brief background story on the creative process behind this body of work! Also, whats the idea behind the your album artwork cover?

I couldn’t find a job and I was falling behind on bills. It was looking like I’d have to move back to TX & start over; songs like “GLO” and “Chillin on my own” were demos for a tape called “Cloud Velvet”; But during that low time I was skipping sleep, stalking DJ Grumble’s SoundCloud, trying to find my voice
In the group BADYOSHI, and basically looking for the “light” in all the anxiety and stress.

I left the country to Visit my girl in DK, and that time in Copenhagen was liberating. I gained perspective, and wrote everyday doing feature verses for KOSH and songs w TA7J until finally I got a phone call from SEAAN BROOKS with some terrible news about a family member. Mad love to him man, I wrote “The Source” right after that phone call and decided to create the tape. Hit up DJ Grumble and it was a Go. As far as the art, s/o to Jazz Williams being a fire artist, she sent it to us a while back and it was the right one for this. The wolf headed man is the internal Patronus; represents the light of the tape, the light within, you could call it my patronus but the light is within us all; the wolf headed man just a representation.

We noticed you have a great tone, style and originality behind this album. How do you manage to stay creatively dope and maintain pushing dope material? As you know the majority of rappers cant stay consistent on an album.

Stay busy. Lows, highs, rain, snow, make a way into the studio, cut off the WiFi and cell. What it take to be a super Saiyan?

Being an indie artist, how do you feel about having the power in your hands, not having to rely on a label or company to push your music?

It doesn’t feel any type of way cuz nobody ever pushed my work for me. No body ever picked up my work and pushed me up or forward. I just been having to decide for myself what we doing and how we take that to the next level. My beats wack tho, I make trash beats. Give me a year tho. I’m working on myself daily and want to work with any artists doing the same; I ain’t above no one, I’m right here working too.

How does social media play a role in SCRIBEMECCA? How are fans / supporters helping your movement?

B.A SCRIBEMECCA is me, Blake Anthony SCRIBEMECCA; all my social media is me. I don’t perpetrate or post anime shitt I don’t know about; I never been In a gang or gang banged. I’m really not portraying anything, people are just seeing my life style. @Chefscribe, @scribemecca just good food & just rapping on stage or in the basement. I really don’t do shitt else. You can get that ass whooped in street fighter if you want it though.
But damn I love my listeners. No fans, only listeners always hitting me up showing love and sending vids playing my shitt. Shitt inspire me, I’m too honored and I feel like I owe y’all 10x the work.

With this being an underground hip hop site, we always ask this important question. What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?

I don’t even know. Hip hop so cultural, underground is basically whatever isn’t pop or mainstream. If it was popular could it be underground? And if it’s underground and popular then what is underground? Boom Bap? Black star is not an underground album. So idk.
