Thomas Burgundy – “Inner City Hues: The Secondhand Paintings” (Album Review)

Thomas Burgundy  gives the world an introspective look inside of his soul as the Lynwood raised artist drops a new album titled “Inner City Hues : The Secondhand Paintings“. From the start of this album, I was captivated by the sonic sound filled with melodic lyrics and catchy melodies, “Secondhand Kaleidoscope” was the perfect introduction for this dynamic album as I was excited to continue. The album continues with “Trail Mix” starting with a familiar road to the LA natives showing his grassroots and symbolic thought. The trap production & insightful lyrics create a melodic music recipe. “Innercity Hues” begins to heat up as the storyline finds us on “Providence Blvd”. The imagery of this song paints the story of young women who live in the underworld not by choice but chance guided by a pimp holding her family issues over her head to exploit her body for profit. The song goes even deeper flipping the story as she gets away to come across help in exchange for the exact same thing. so many plot twist & turns, Later to find peace within with a refreshing smile.

“105” Interlude gives the listener a break between the album filled with wisdom of an elder gearing for the next round of hits. “Inner City Blues” is once again an introspective song detailing the background and growth of Thomas Burgundy but this time a deeper look into his foundation of life and lessons that created his moral standpoints becoming a young man. Burgundy names the stereotypical jobs & dreams the systems plant inside human mind showing his deep connection with not only the culture but the economic pulse also. “Color of the Law” is an abstract song with quality production highlighting the injustice of Blacks & Mexicans being profiled for the color of their skin. The deep concepts keeps you on the edge waiting for the next tune. “Mad as hell’ rolls next on the list as it starts in a cinematic picture setting the tempo for a high energy concept of money power & fear. Still touching deeply on spiritual issues this trap sound Hip-Hop revolt is perfect for fans who love revolutionary music.

“Purple Exit E” starts with a kid riddling insight to the audience and questions “How you goin fight oppression & you still fighting depression”. The theme of this album has been the inner thoughts & lessons of Thomas Burgundy as he puts everything out on the table in this album giving his fans an inside look at his soul. Very out of the box but amazing sonic sounds like a rock fusion hip-hop base in the next track “Get it How U Live” touching on street politics & growing up figuring your way in the world, this song is dead on personal & can be appreciated by the real Hip-Hop lovers. Lynwood’s own than bodies the legendary instrumental sampled by Jay-z “Dead Presidents” showing his lyrical poise stoical vibe, I was impressed by the entirety of this album now reaching the final stretch now reaching “Marigolds” already a melodic sample to begin the cut, The raw hit potential of this track is what makes it worthwhile. As the album comes to an end I had to listen once more just because. Follow Thomas Burgundy on FB and IG for news & music updates.
