The first time I listened to Alchemist and Evidence‘s new collab LP Lord Steppington I was immediately reminded of Alchemist’s extensive work with rapper Oh No as the duo Gangrene. This style of hip-hop, which I would even consider a sub-genre, is characterized by instrumentals and flows that are very straightforward, rugged, and unrefined, which artists like Action Bronson, Evidence, and Oh No easily excel at. Lord Steppington is an entertaining and convoluted listen that fans of hip-hop’s rawer side will really appreciate on multiple levels, but similar to the Gangrene projects, the overall lack of variation from this formula makes it hard to listen to the entire album on repeat for a long time. I find I enjoy songs like Mums In the Garage more when they’re mixed into a playlist and inherently stick out as individually unique entities. All of the songs on the album are roughly the same quality, where I would rate each track between a 6.5 and an 8.5, with Mums In the Garage being my favorite, followed by the bass thudding Step Masters. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that Slug and Brother Ali were executive producers for the album. Fuck yeah Rhymesayers.
