D.C. – Q&A Interview

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

I was raised in Columbus, OH, single parent home just like any other kid around me.  My mom was always gone at work, so we were pretty much raising ourselves.  She had to do what she had to do, and being in the streets, we learned that we had to as well.

Recording music came later, before I was just rapping and freestylin. Me and my crew used to record us with two tape decks, one to record the other to play music and record demos like that. It was crazy, low-budget and crazy fun!

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

The ability to be heard. I feel like from the first day I heard some rap music I was like wow, another creative way to get myself heard. To be the life of the room.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

My music is a blend of styles. I’m from the Mid-West, you know for a long time we were known as the home of Bone thugs; so we are identified with rapping fast. Them and Twister, but I also show my east coast influences, like Nas, and Jay. I really liked Redman and Meth how they represented the smokers, you know. I appreciate that!

What separates me from other MC’s is I really love this for a number of reasons. For one, I love being creative so it keeps it new, fresh and different. If I do have to follow a formula, I’m going to do it My way. Two, I do this with goals that are past music. I want to affect change in my community, not through music but through the means that being successful in music can afford me. I have plans for myself, my team, and the many communities that my music can reach.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

I’ve worked with dope artist, from my homie Curt GWin and, who I like to call my musical twin, Hot Handz. This guy D1, he’s a genius.  Let’s see, my man from Atlanta J.U., I’ve recorded with my the homie Y.O.D.A., I’ve worked with some dope artist all Indie at this point, but they wont be long.

I would love to work with anyone that’s about the music and making a memorable song for the people in this time. As long as it’s right and not forced and works… I’ll work.

Who would I love too work with? My list goes like this, (and not necessarily in this order).

• Nas -on some disruptive political shit
• Wiz Khalifa – On some party and bullshit songs. (I would actually sign to Taylor Gang #shamelessplug)
• Wale– On a dope GoGo song
• Chrisette Michelle– Soulful and just dope
• Pharell– On some next level music
• Jay-Z- On some pass the torch epic music.
• Chris Brown– I mean who wouldn’t want too?

Just to name a few but that’s at the top of my list off the top of my head.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Some of the BEST music that has yet to meet the world on a mainstream stage.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production?

I like chopped and screwed music a lot. Ohio is very much like a small eastern Houston. I have production by 4Klassiks Music Group, Purps on the beat, Cash Jordan, Strong Symphony, NYCE productions (elite producers). I don’t discriminate man,, I like some trap beats but I mostly love strings and chords in my music. That’s the production that I really lean towards at least on this project.

And who would you like to work with?

I want to work with Mike Will Made it(Bought The World Is crazy), Sledgren, Pharrell, Timberland, I have a real Wish List lol!

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

It’s all about “Progression… The Life Project”, it’s dropping 8-17-2014. “Standing Ovation” and “Tell Me What U Want feat D1” is available on iTunes and google Play RIGHT NOW!!!

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of Progression… The Life Project

? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Album Art Cover. Progression is showing my growth since leaving Ohio. I’ve experienced so much and done things that grew me, expanded my world view and creatively pushed me. The competition is stiff in Atlanta and honestly it’s forced me to get in touch with ME as an artist; and it’s made me the best me at this point in my life. I chronicle that on this project, I talk about the sober moments on this journey where you have self-reflection and awareness.. then you have the not so sober moments like the song “3@m feat CurtGWin”. It culminates in “Where U’ve Never Been”. Where this shows me, this is my progression as an artist. Yes progression is a life project, but right now this is where I’m at and it will only get better.

The artwork for the album had to be artsy. I wanted both the cover and the back to look like it could go in an art gallery. That’s why I had the artwork look like it was on a canvas, like a painting.
