Freddy DeMent – Q&A Interview

Real Talk

Yo Freddy, please tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from & How long have you been making Hip Hop?

I’m an artist from Dayton, OH. I go by the name of Freddy DeMent. I’m one half of the group The Stoop Kids with my dude Urb. I’ve been making music for about 4-5 years.

What influences you in making Hip Hop in the Ohio scene?

I feel that what I do and the material I rap about, compared to the things underground rappers usually rap about is just really different in its own way. So that pushes me to get my music out there and get people to vibe to something new.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

Back to what I said in the last question, I feel I’m just different from the usual underground rapper. This is because most rappers start out by talking about money they don’t have and talking about how they can get any girl.
I think I bring a more reality vibe to the music because even if I touch on those points in my songs it’s more of a fun and witty way.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

On my tape “Real Talk”, I collab with my dude Urb and another one of my friends, Ty Spacely. Both could do amazing things and names to watch.
In the past I just messed around with a few songs with my friends Lee, and Marcus.
My biggest wants on the collab front would be with my favorite artist ever, Kid Cudi and Childish Gambino.
But short-term I’m down to work with any other up and coming talent.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

To me it’s comparable to the Minor Leagues of baseball.
It’s where your talents might be raw and so might your musical quality but if you show people what you got. You might just get the call up and be headed for the bright lights.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?

My favorite producers are Chuck Inglish, Emile Haynie, ID Labs, Dot Da Genius and many others.
My production has mostly been done by NBBeats, Fresco Stevens, Melrose Zee, LA Chase, and my dude Urb (@Reallilurb) has been working on his production and I expect to make some tracks with his production as well.
I’ll gladly work with anyone listed above and anyone that has an amazing sound.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

Right now I’m just promoting my new mixtape “Real Talk” but Urb and I might come out with a new mixtape for The Stoop Kids that will follow-up our first tape “Not The Usual”, which is still up for download.

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of Real Talk? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Album Art Cover.

This tape has been in the works for about 2-3 years. Just because I wanted to make this tape a great first impression for people who were just listening for the first time. The song “Life of the Party” was actually the first song done about 2-3 years ago. The rest of the songs were done at Urban’s studio, Back Stoop Productions, where all the recording, mixing and mastering took place with Urb’s help.
The concept of the tape was the whole “Real” aspect of my songs. Hence the name “Real Talk”. The artwork done by Tom Van Atta plays with the theme by adding a comic bubble around the title and adding a piece of me into the artwork by placing some Chuck T’s in the middle.
