Josh Woods – Q&A Interview
Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?
I was born in 1993. Josh Woods is my government name that my parents gave me. That’s who I really am so i just stuck with it. It was more than just making hip hop music. I love the hip hop lifestyle. Its what my soul feels and lets me express all of my feelings through vibrations and different sounds. This feeling has always been there but i actually started recording in 2008 my freshman year in high school.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
My #1 influence who actually introduced me to real hip-hop with substance behind it and showed me how many incredible underground artists are out there would be my homie, DJ & producer Nick Meredith a.k.a. “Nsomnia”. But as far as well known artists, I get alot of my influence from everyone and everything. Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan, Fugees and even newer artists the game like Chance, Joey Bada$$, Vic Mensa, the list goes on and on. Hip Hop music is just a fraction of my inspiration though. I get inspired by everything from all genres of music and all forms of art.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?
Im always looking to change it up, Me and Nsomnia love phsycadelics and music. So we keep our minds open to all possibilities. I dont settle for mediocre bars. They all need to come with a true meaning as well as flow with the beat. Honestly the number one thing that separates us from other artists is our love and dedication to this shit. If you tell me theres an artists that loves this shit more than me you’re straight up lying. This is all I do and I love it more and more every single day.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?
Villebillies, Elephant Room and louisville locals like Touch AC, Manfred, Ace Pro and 6ix Element.
Would like to collab with any artist who is going to come as hard as i am. Doing collabs is my favorite part of hip hop. Bringing multiple minds together to make one big sound.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
Underground hip hop is where the true soul music will always be. Most people don’t pay attention like the true hip-hop heads do. But I am trying to make music to where everybody can love it as much as my fellow hip-hop heads do.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
J Dilla, El-P, Premo, Pete Rock, MF DOOM and once again the list goes on forever. Nsomnia, BJ Young, Ace Pro and Dustin Tucker from the Villebillies do all of my production.
I would like to work with DJ Premier and any other open minded producers too. It’s all love.
Any current or future projects you are promoting?
We dropped Sunny Daze on labor day a couple weeks ago. And we are working on many future projects that we will be releasing throughout this year. I don’t want to spoil the fans with too many details but big things are coming. We’re grinding every single day.
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of Sunny Daze? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Mixtape Art Cover.
A shit load of LSD and Shrooms. It was all positive vibes making this project from beginning to end. And it reflected in the music. It came together very naturally just the way it was suppose to.
