Q&A With So-Cal’s Rising Hip Hop artist Captain Cur3
Hey Captain Cur3! Much respect on your new feature packed album “Level Three EP“. . We appreciate solid underground music, especially from true up and coming So-Cal MC’s like yourself. Please tell me how long have you been rapping? Do you remember where you were at exactly when you wrote your first track!!??
I’ve been at it actively for 5 years haha. I wrote my first track in my aunt’s hot garage at the age of 13 I saw my older cousin writing so I sat down and grabbed a pen and boom.
Your style and rhyme scheme is super raw, aggressive and really ORIGINAL? How important is it for your to stay ORIGINAL? I’m sure you hate it when fans say you sound like ???…LOL
Originality is very important when you have a very saturated market, I mean everyone raps but who brings that original vibe. •oh man haha I’ve gotten Joey bada$$, Freddie gibbs, and Earl sweatshirt. Eh I don’t hate it those dudes are pretty dope!
Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences? Any Los Angeles, CA influences? Was there anyone in your life that motivated your to STEP IT UP when it comes to making dope Hip Hop? Shout out to Lynwood, CA!!!! I grew up in South Gate, CA so I know exactly where that city is at!!
Actually a bunch of different genres helped me, I tend to listen to how people tell their stories and each genre conveys a message in a different but dope way. In Jr high I started heavily listening to strong-arm steady, the green up mixtape was ill. My dad (self lion) actually is a huge motivation, he did some tracks with KRS-one, LMNO, chali 2na, and many more and it set a bar for me to get my bar work together. I was born out there but went to school in OC haha.
Please breakdown the creative process of your latest project “Level Three EP“.
There was a lot of weed smoking going on most definitely haha but idk you ever feel like the beat just writes the lyrics? I do. So when a dope beat comes on my brain goes to work and the beat takes control. And doodling helps a crap ton with writer’s block haha.
Any new projects coming out!?
Yeah I’m working on a LP titled “Captain’s Log” it’s gonna have some dope features like Blu, Planet Asia, and hopefully Mickey taelor she got those vibes haha.
Rappers nowadays think by throwing up a few videos up on social media and pushing quick projects, they can blow up overnight! Give us your view on how over saturated the market is right now with so many MC’s/Producers but not to many quality music?
I think a good majority of people stopped caring about the music itself and started focusing more on imagery, so you get these Overnight rap kids who have a little money that go nuts on the video production but don’t care anything about the actual song production.
Out the box type question, If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.
Still in training from planet Asia haha I’d pick that any day.
Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
Ughh means freedom. A lot of the times we say stuff on a track that would be difficult to say in a normal day-to-day convo.
Where can people find you on the web? Drop all the vital links.
I honestly worked hard at just having people Google or YouTube “captaincur3” the music is everywhere you just gotta listen haha.
Lastly, and shout out?
God will always fasho get a S/O but also S/O to my boy savior soul and the whole palm trees and progress movement, Offbeatninja put his foot off in this shit so bigups to him on the production. And lastly but not least big shouts to my pops for exposing me to hip hop in the first place. Rip mom, I do this for you.
