Jay Kila is a talented young rapper who presents a ground breaking new sound based on a simple concept: honesty. A native of the Upper East Side in New York City, Kila is Half-Indian and Jewish (a Hindjew). His rapid-fire delivery and intellectual lyrics present portraits of city life as well as Kila’s struggle to find his place in society. He has opened for Wu-Tang Clan,Digable Planets, and KRS 1 – performing both in NYC and Atlanta.
After graduating from Stanford University in 2009, Kila turned down the allure of Wall Street to pursue his dream of being a hip-hop artist. He proceeded to record two mixtapes – The Internship and Upper East Beast – both talking about Kila’supbringing in New York City and displaying his proficiency with rhyme.
It was Upper East Beast that caught the ear of hip-hop pioneer Daddy-O from the legendary rap group Stetsasonic. Kila was mentored by Daddy-O for a year in Atlanta as part of Daddy-O’s artist development clinic. It was during this time that Kilaperfected his live show while completing a third mixtape: 50 Shades of Jay – Kila’s most personal project to date.
Kila has just finished his fourth EP – Jay Misérable, which draws inspiration from the music of Les Misérables to tell a modern day tale of repression, love, angst and validation. He has also just signed a development deal with an independent production company to create a television show based on his life.
