Cody Coyote Gives Voice To The Voiceless In “Passage” (Album Review)

The indigenous Hip Hop community is a small yet growing scene with new wave conscious artists using their creativity to spread awareness for change. When changes are not made, and voices are not being heard for indigenous rights Cody Coyote out of Ontario, Canada is stepping in and fighting back with his music. Being Ojibwe/Irish descent with ancestry from Matachewan First Nation, he uses Hip Hop as a form of expression to give a voice to the voiceless.

Passage” is the latest album by Cody Coyote released this year consisting of 11 meaningful tracks. As we do in most of our reviews, we will highlight a few songs as recommendations and will highlight the lead single off the project, “Debwe”.

“Helpless” is the perfect intro for this project especially after glimpsing at the album cover art depicting indigenous people and colonists fighting for land which is represented by a heart. In this song he breaks down his struggles dealing with detailed facts of the past, and also bring up topics of current times.

When is comes down to that raw Hip Hop sound consisting of bars over dope beats, Cody Coyote brings it with “Keep the Peace”, and “Revolution”. He also compliments the project with the official video for “Debew” which you can watch above. Coming from Cali, we love the West-Coast G-Funk feel to this song and visual. With a wide range of musical styles in this project, he even has something for the club djs and dance heads with “Ogimaa”.

Cody Coyote proves in this project there is no limit to his creativity while juggling the grind of being an independent artist and activist using a voice as a platform for change within the indigenous community. The powerful messages and stories you find in “Passage” reflects that hard work, passion, and never ending fight for his people using one of the most powerful tools that make change, MUSIC! Overall rating, this project earns a 8/10 in our books.
