Doopy Rugz – “Phase 3” (Album Review)

Since being familiar with Doopy Rugz by featuring him on our Mic Sessions and also covering his single, “Energy”, off his new album, “Phase 3“, now it’s finally time to dive into his full length project.  Akron, Ohio only has a few names the resonate in our scene, but I think Doopy definitely stands out from the rest. Not only is it a rare thing to have 25 tracks on a project, but to put out so much material in one piece of work sparked my interest immediately. It’s the third installment of the Phase series he is currently pushing.

Listening to the lyrics off  the project, being different is what he is striving for with songs like “Real Fast”.  He also shows fans a inside view of his life with songs like “In My Feeling” featuring fellow military vet King Moe and Eddy.  Collaboration wise, a highlight for me was the soft vocals by 7 Goddess in “Energy”.  It’s a smooth song diversifying his catalog also showing his creativity.  When it comes down to current events, check out the “Dead Presidents Freestyle”, more of an Capella over a piano riff.  Being married and being a binge watcher with my wife of the reality show, “90 Day Fiance”, I swear Doopy Rugz is the only rapper to make a song based on the show which it dope.  “Some People” is a song that brings that boom bap consciousness back to the scene when it’s really needed.  The bonus track “Follow Your Dreams” is also a must listen if you looking encouragement to move forward in that million dollar idea you have is your head. Overall, this project gives fans a bit of everything.  Some music suited for the underground heads, also not leaving out those commercial heads who are looking for the next club or radio hit.

On the production tip, this project is on point. Not many emcees know how to pick beats that cater to their style of rap. I could tell Doopy Rugz really took emphasis to this.  Picking dope beats to expand on the message he is trying to deliver is typically the approach the many greats also do. I also like the many collabs giving us the opportunity in finding new names to add to our listening catalog and playlists.

We give “Phase 3” a above average score of 7/10. As you can see, we highlighted only a handful of songs above so you can take our insight, and see/listen for yourself. You can stream the full project below.
