First Time Spinner “A Beginners Guide To DJing” | iDJnow.com

What kind of DJ do you envision yourself being? Do you want to play at dance clubs or are you more of a wedding disc jockey? Every deejay has his or her own unique style, but no matter where your target venues are, you’re going to need the right DJ gear to spin, scratch, fade, and wow the crowds. Some basics you’ll need for your setup include turntables, a laptop, specialized software, controllers, a DJ mixer, headphones, and speakers. You’re also going to need vinyl for scratching and spinning, and/or digital audio. Some DJs prefer vinyl over digital, while others are devout fans of digital over vinyl. You may already know which one you prefer, or you may be waiting to find out through experience. Why do some DJs prefer digital audio options such as CDs and MP3s? For one thing, these computerized versions won’t wear out or warp. You can even burn extra CDs, so you’ll be well stocked with a wide variety of songs wherever you perform. MP3s are capable of holding a ton of music, so you can tote your entire tunes-library around with you at all times. There is definitely something to be said for this amount of portability. Traveling light can give you immense flexibility, so you can change your tunes as the mood dictates. You never really know what the vibes of an event will be till you’re there generating music. Not only that, with digital tunes, you can call up any band or song at any time. No scavenging around for records, and you won’t have to worry about anyone bumping into your setup and scratching a vinyl disc. Some controllers and mixers can be utilized through your phone or other handheld device. On the other hand, some disc jockeys swear by vinyl. Vinyl devotees say that digital audio is merely a snapshot of sounds, so does not create the depth and sound waves that classic records and LPs produce. On a small home stereo system, these differences might not be as noticeable as they are when booming out of a set of professional-grade speakers at a musical event. Another reason people prefer vinyl is that it’s easier to predict what’s coming up due to the breakdown in each record’s grooves. And then there’s the creativity factor. Some individuals swear that records are just more rewarding to scratch and spin, even if it’s a bit more work than opting for digital setups.

No matter whether you want to DJ your relatives’ weddings, retirement parties, birthday celebrations, or hit the big time and play with celebrities in the best nightclubs, you’re going to need to gather up the best equipment you can afford. As a first time spinner, you’ll need to buy your gear, get a mentor or teach yourself the ropes, practice, practice, practice, and then start booking gigs. You’re also going to decide for yourself whether you’re a digital audio type or a die-hard vinyl lover, or maybe you’ll want to work with both. To learn more about what to look for as you gather up your headphones, speakers, controllers, mixers, software and turntables, take a look at this infographic.
