Marine Veterans Using Hip Hop & Social Media To Tell Their Stories
With the influx of post 9/11 military veterans who grew up in the 90’s getting out the service, many of whom have a passion for Hip Hop, are using social media to grab attention and to share their experiences with thought provoking lyrics. I first got introduced to this new scene off my Facebook feed with a viral video made by William Fitzpatrick from Brooklyn, NY, an emcee with a 100% lyrical underground style who I immediately connected with after listening to his work. Most of his lyrics have a strong impact on former Marines, and Corpsman (Medics) who served and have similar experiences. Theophilus Tor is another former Marine from Temecula, CA who is consistent in making music dedicated to many of his fallen friends, and has thousands of video shares circulating online.
We enjoy watching these homemade videos knowing that these warriors from across the country are not only representing veterans in a positive way, but they are not letting the effects of combat affect them. By expressing themselves to the fullest through music and Hip Hop, they are also reaching many civilians who love good music in general.
