Cellis – Q&A Interview
Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?
I’m a 24-year-old recording artist from Baltimore, MD with intentions of becoming a legend. I have been crafting music in some form or another for about 10 years but my directions were geared towards hip hop around the age of 16.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
Knowing where hip hop came from and knowing that I can become a piece of that puzzle is a huge influence.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?
I make music that is very relateable, when you listen to my tracks you’re getting much more than a song. You’re getting a moment, a feeling and ultimately an experience that I hope you can connect with. I care about the music, I care about my perception and I care about the people listening.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?
Not too many collabs, everything has been homegrown but my favorite collabs have happened with fellow musician and good friend Zeno. In the near future I’d love to connect with bigger local-turned-national acts such as “Logic”. When I make it to the point where I can collab with “Legends” the list is never-ending.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
Music that hasn’t been exposed to the main stream media outlets. I have nothing against “pop” music but the underground is what makes or breaks every artists before they hit the mainstream. It’s beautiful to see an artist rise from underground roots to a much bigger pop culture platform. It’s especially amazing to see when you have an artist stick to his core values like Kendrick Lamar, J Cole and even Chance The Rapper at this point.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
My production tastes are extremely varied and usually depends on the day and how I’m feeling. With that being said I work with a ton of producers. We’ve got about half a dozen producers on the current project but Omito and French Kiwi Juice are accountable for my favorite tracks on this LP.
Any current or future projects you are promoting?
“Rich Boy, Poor Man” is the current project we are working on and we will be done the recording process this month. I’m really excited to get this project out to the world because we have put a ton of hard work and sonic exploration into it.
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of G.O.M.D. Music Video?
G.O.M.D. was all about going out, having a great time and getting the world off your back. A lot of the video was b-roll, which was cool because it showed the sporadic process of making that video. It was fairly off the whim, I grabbed my closest friends, hit up some local hot spots in Baltimore and I think Keenan Hairston did a great job in pulling everything together.
