Drew Prince (Detroit, MI) – Q&A Interview

Drew Prince

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

My name is Andrew Prince and I’m from the Metro Detroit area. I spent my time growing up on the Westside of the Detroit and Farmington Hills (The Hills most known). I graduated from Hampton University in VA last year so I lived in the 7 Cities for about 5 years. I’m a Saxophone player first off, I’ve been playing since 5th grader and I’ve been making beats and producing music since about 07 so I’ve been making hip hop for about 7 years and I’ve been in music for over 10 years

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

Hip Hop is my culture, it is the language I speak, it’s how I express myself, Hip Hop is the way I’m able to express myself. Thats one big influence, the next big influence is the music I listen to that pretty much explains my life. J Dilla (RIP) is my biggest influence from a production standpoint, He’s the GOAT on the beats Imo, Next in line after him is 9th Wonder. Little Brother x The Listening and The Minstrel Show pretty much explain my 4.5 years in College to the tee

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

My music directly reflects my main influences. Dilla and 9th as I mentioned earlier, also to add Robert Glasper, Pharrell, Pete Rock, Premo, and my producer colleague, XLNCE, Soundboy, Kinetic, DDK, just to name some of them

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

I’ve done tracks for Manny Diesel, Dave Lyric, GinoTheGhost, MODE, Dee Skillz, The ACC, Young Fuol, Microphone Jordan, RoboRiles, J Roc, Jamz, and of course just about everyone in my Royal Blood Fam. Everybody I work(ed) with Is one the come  up and has a slight buzz,You guys should really peep some of the names I named.

In the near future I’m really really…REALLY lol trying to work with Khemist, Anthony King and Dre Charles of Open Oven, the Clear Soul Forces, Nolan The Ninja and CJ Fly of Pro Era just to name some folk. I would love to have them all on my next project Little Boy Weird 2 dropping mid-late summer

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Underground Hip Hop is the hurtful truth of music that is covered up by music about trapping, b**ches, popping mollies, chains, and material things

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?

I’m a Hip Hop producer and Saxophone player so I make my own beats. My influences include the names I mentioned before. Dilla, 9th, Premo, Pete, Pharrell. A recent cat I’ve been rocking with lately is Thelonious Martin. I think he’s someone who proved you can get on with music without resorting to making trap, which is mad dope to me.Shoot man I actually would love to work with him too. He’s from Chicago too so he’s a Midwest dude like me. I feel like we could come up with some crazy sh*t off that alone

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

Little Boy W.E.I.R.D  2: When Everything Is Different. is my next project looking to drop mid-late summer. It’s going to be another compilation like Weirdo’s Revenge is. LBW2 is a concept I’ve been working on since 2011, when I dropped the 1st Little Boy Weird. I’m expecting LBW2 to be my best project thus far,I’m excited.

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of Weirdo’s Revenge EP? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Album Art Cover.

Weirdo’s Revenge is apart of the Little Boy Weird movement I talked about in the last question. My whole concept behind Weird is standing out from the box the world tends to put us in, and the importance of embracing individuality. As far as the artwork my mans Arcades is a genius bruh, first off. The artwork bascially describes that the Weird is about to take whats theres, after years of being played and disrespected the weird is about to make noise and come up. Quick fun fact about the artwork. It was the original LBW2 artwork, the New LBW2 artwork….bruh…..ill just leave it at that
