KnuOrigen – Q&A Interview

Altar Egos - The Highs and The Helloes

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you and Brazzy link up

I am a person addicted to creativity mixed with old school values. Really keen on taking the truths of older people who have wisdom and then refashioning that to be relevant to my generation.

Brazzy is one of the illest samplers on the planet and a great friend of mine. We met in high school and have been brothers ever since. His family took me in like one of their own, as it relates to conversing with me, giving me advice and just loving on me so since then me and Brazz have had a dope relationship.

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

Weird things. My Christian faith but not what’s on TV or what most are used to instead I read A LOT of Christians from the period of the late first century to the 4th. I know that’s odd but they represent a time when Christianity had a unique balance of passion, thoughtfulness, love, humility and most of all a mystical sense about the world. I love those things. Beyond that Anime influences my music (Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is my show). Along with Conscious Hip Hop (Kendrick). Folk music (Ben Howard). And any music that can help me think better about life and help me deal with my emotions and life problems in good ways.

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs & Producers?

My music is soooooooooo the same lol. I know being different is a big deal so I wanna frame it different. I make music to stand in (not out) to what we know is true. I want music to resonate with the souls of people. I’m not tryna give something you have never heard before but rather draw out that voice that is always talking to you but gets covered in all the noise. The same voice.

How is your music chemistry with Brazzy. Did it take a long time to mold together or was it instant chemistry in the studio?

Brazzy is the only producer who can send me beats and the words come to me quicker than I can write them down. His beats feel like they are a part of me haha. Some beats work against my creativity but Brazzy’s just work with me. We been together for a while so I don’t wanna say it was instant but more of a natural progression.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Underground Hip Hop is a genre in Hip Hop that prizes content over attraction.

How has your city embraced you so far as a Hip Hop Representative.

My city has ignored me for years but me and my bro who I work with out here Ki’Shon Furlow have been breaking out finally and starting to get acknowledgment.

Any future projects you are promoting soon?

YES! I am a part of a collective called Out of the Blue who will be releasing a project before the year is up. Its a duo with myself and a female emcee named Kay Sade.

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of Altar Egos: The Highs and The Helloes V1? Also/ tell us a little bit about the concept and idea behind your Album/Mixtape Cover Art.

Ok so if I had more time I would give a full break down but long story short the album deals with the difference between those who know God and those who don’t. It wrestles with the truth that, on the surface, the people who know God do not look so different from those who do not on the surface. Both suffer, both endure (and fail) with temptation, both have desires for more. I will not say what the answer is but if you listen close you will see that some people are “above” and some are “below” aka “The Highs and The Helloes.” But location is not the indicator. I leave the searching for the truth to the listener
