My Dreamz – Q&A Interview

MyDreamz_HipHopSongArtwork

Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop & how did you come up with your Stage Name.

My name is Glenn. I was born and raised in upstate New York, but since have been taking residence all over the east coast (FL & VA). Writing and recording my own music since the age of 14, I actually started out playing music in a punk band. My transition into hip hop began at 18 years old when I started producing beats and recording local rappers.

My “stage name,” My Dreamz, is pretty self-explanatory. They are my dreams. I added the “z” at the end as a tribute to Tupac who always seemed to be replacing the “s” with a “z” on his song and album titles.

Whats your motivation to make music?

I am here to change the world. In the hopes of “moving the movement” and continuously reaching a bigger audience, I try to spread positivity. I’ve been making music for so long now that it is just a part of me. Follow your dreams, sometimes they are all we have.

Describe your style, and what separates you from other MCs?

What separates My Dreamz from other MCs is my story, and style in general, I suppose. I was previewing some of my new material for my friend Lane, and he looked at me and asked, “What genre is this even?”

That is the intended effect. In trying to establish myself and My Dreamz as a multi-genre recording artist, I hope to forge a brand-new, original sound.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

Music is what I do, so when my friends come over, they get on the track. Most of my collaborations are done with friends like Nap Turna, Millzy, and Kilo. I also recently did a song with a rock artist, Scotty Vandal, on a song called “The Girl and Her Shell.”

My dream collaborations would be to work with Kanye or Kenny Vasoli (Vacationer). 2 Chainz seems like he’d be fun to hang out with, too!

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

“Underground Hip Hop” is anything under the radar of the mainstream. I would like to say it is solely artists who are trying to create something different, but unfortunately there are the “artists” who imitate some of the radio garbage too. I don’t understand them, but to each their own I guess.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?

Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of sampling. I’ve stayed away from that for a while, but my influences are too vast to list. I write, record and produce for myself. As well as taking on music video production, booking shows, and all other ends of the music business; I have my work cut out for me. I don’t give up.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

I’ve been releasing sample-heavy hip hop songs, which in their culmination will be put together as a mixtape, and I believe will be entitled Coffee House Rap. I am also writing the autobiographic story of My Dreamz as the final installation of the “4 Project,” which in its entirety will be composed of the 4 Hip Hop EP (rap EP), 4 Electronics (electronic EP), 4 Independence (indie rock album) and the book. The first 2 EPs and the indie rock album are available now!

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of “4 Hip Hop” EP? Also/ tell us a little bit about the concept and idea behind your Album/Mixtape Cover Art.

Yikes! The 4 Hip Hop EP was fueled by late night parties and a sense of urgency being that most of us had to wake up the next day to go to jobs. We’d go into the studio and toss around song ideas to lay over beats I had produced. The album cover is very amateur but the number 4 being a consistent symbol. A psychic told me that the number 4 was my “destiny number” or something like that. Music has always been my lifeline, helping me get through the toughest of times, even close calls with death.
