Q&A With Alabama’s Very Own Dirk LP

Hey Dirk LP, we would like to thank you for your contribution to underground Hip Hop and keeping the culture alive! We really enjoyed your new mixtape “Built For This”! Please tell us what exact part of Alabama are you from? How long have you been making music?

No problem & Much appreciated …I’m from a small hood (Kelly Hill) in a small town called Harpersville, Alabama. I started off at a very young age pushing my Cousin and his partner’s tapes & by 11 I was composing beats & recording..

What influenced you to become a Hip Hop artist? What were the main factors that got you into, quote on quote, “Underground Hip Hop”?!

At an early age I was blown away by the hip – hop culture..Coming from a small town, we didn’t see many people attain a master’s degree or make it to a pro athlete’s status..All we had been YO MTV Raps, Rap City The Basement and movies like “Boyz In The Hood”, “Menace To Society” & “Scarface”..

Your style and rhyme scheme is super raw, hard-hitting and ORIGINAL. How important is it for your to stay ORIGINAL? How would you describe your style?

Wow..Thank you so much..It’s very important for me to stay original, At 11, I came in this game knowing I was filling a void..At the time, I was only making music I like to listen to.. The industry is so over saturated with artist that ether don’t have substance or rapping & living the same life as every other rapper..My style is Southern Reality Rap..Theses are my stories & thoughts, my ups as well as my downs..

Tell us about the creative process for your new album “Built For This”!

While recording “BFT”, I was at a total transitional point in my life..Not only was I getting older, but my finances, living situation hustle all changed at the blink of an eye..I was facing a number of different charges, one of which was a felony assault (which I beat). My Family got bigger, Hustle Stronger & friends fewer…I had a chance to sit back and re-evaluate my life, goals & what was really important to me.So, on this record I focused on keeping it all the way real with myself knowing this joint might cost me a lot of core Dirk LP fans..

In 2017, who is on your own personal music rotation playlist!? Any new artists you are listening to?

1.Meek Mill “Wins & Losses”, 2.Devin The Dude “Acustic Levitation”, 3.All the Outkast Records, 4.ScarFace “Deeply Rooted”, 5.Jay-Z “4:44”, 6.All The Fabolous Records, 7.Freck Billionaire “Rich Young Report 8.Fugees The Score….New artist I’m rockin’ with A Boogie, Young Boy, Money Bagg, Anderson Paak & Rae Sremmurd

Any new projects and videos you are working on? Planning on a tour anytime soon?

Yep..I have 2 albums on the way One is a compilation, the other is a CrAzY joint with my Homie Grim Reefah..We got few videos on the way from “Built For this” directed by my dude Garrett Coyte.

Out the box type question, If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.

Dr. Dre – Chronic 2001 lol
