Q&A With New Yuma, AZ Based Underground Hip Hop Artist Murkx
Hey Murkx! We always appreciate new up and coming Hip Hop artists who invest into themselves!! Please tell us how many years have you been making music? What area code do you rep over there! Do you remember where and when you were when you decided to become an artist!?
I’ve been making music a little over 3 years, since i dropped my first track which was a remix of “Who Shot Ya” by Notorious B.I.G. the beat to it just really caught my attention and gave me an idea of the sound i want to work towards.
Over here i rep 928, which consists of Yuma, Somerton & lastly San Luis, AZ. I personally stay in Yuma where i have lived all my life.
As a matter of fact i do, it was a few years back when i was a freshman in high school, i was at my homeboys house. I honestly have been writing way back before that but for some reason then THAT day i just thought of how interesting it is to put your thoughts down on a piece of paper & entertain somebody with what is written.
How can you describe your sound in the most ORIGINAL way possible?!
Truthfully i haven’t particularly found my sound, i dont think of my music as a certain sound its just really on which ever the mood is or whichever beat is shown to me, other people might be able to describe my sound but i just simply am not able to.
Are you ready for truly competing in this super over-saturated Hip Hop business! Tons are new artists are being born every week!! And all of them have one thing in common, they all want to BLOW UP! Tell us how you are different? And what is your strategy on separating yourself fro rappers who don’t take this as serious as you are.
I sure am, i love music & i enjoy the creative process of everything that it is all the way from writing lyrics to listening to the final product & pushing that product as hard as i worked on it in the beginning, that is what im made for!
Every artist has the dream of blowing up, that is the main goal for the majority of artists. Although not everyone has the drive & energy to do so, some artists intend to take shortcuts or having things handed to them, feeling entitled to something they have not worked for. There is not any shortcuts in this business. Work being put in is definitely a major factor. I am the opposite of taking shortcuts & believing im owed something, if i want it i go & get it, i work hard for everything i have accomplished to this point and every bad situation i have had on the way pushes me to work even harder & take chances.
If any other rapper is not taking their craft & what they do on a serious note, why even be an artist? I can’t see myself not being serious about something that is my passion, i will always work harder than the next rapper around, always staying true to myself, the hip-hop culture, & above all else the people who support me. Don’t get into hip-hop for the wrong reason therefore you will fail.
We are completely anti MUMBLE-RAP Xan/Drug Rap etc over here at the BLOG!!! Give us your opinion on this type of Hip Hop!! Are you a fan, or can you pass on this? How did the industry end us getting this way!
Mumble rap is criticized heavily because of the drug use & not being able to understand most of what is being said. Drug use in hip-hop has always been involved no matter the volume of how much it is rapped about. The only time that type of music is enjoyed is either at parties, clubs & such. I listen to it every now & then just to see what is new. I believe the industry ended up with this type of music for many reasons, maybe times have changed & that just has to be accepted OR the people in charge of major outlets of music decide to push what they believe is hot in the moment when some of that music fades away never to be heard from again, yet you have underground music that lives for years.
Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences? Any AZ music influences?
My top music influences include the whole 80’s 90’s hip-hop scene, the way no social media was involved but artists still managed to sell thousands of records. Nowadays everybody wants to be a rapper & expect social media to do all the work for them not realizing it takes more than those outlets to really get out there. Dont get me wrong it helps, what is wrong with the hip-hop culture today is mostly anybody is accepted with little to no trace of skill.
Please breakdown the creative process of your debut album “Forget What Ya Heard”?
The creative process of Forget What Ya Heard starts with past/current experiences being thought of as i listen to a beat & from there i decide which experiences go where depending on the mood of the beat. The title itself was a challenge, Forget What Ya Heard was chosen because im telling you to forget anything or anybody you heard before me im the one you want to listen to now.
If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……Only 1 album you can choose.
Funny thing is i only have one favorite hip-hop album that i consider the best of all time which is Ready to Die by Notorious B.I.G.
Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
Underground hip-hop has many meanings to me, one of them being the type of hip-hop that is not played on the radio, perhaps because of the profanity or because “its not what people want to hear” when mostly all the people i know wish underground hip hop was played on the radio. Me as an underground artist, i move past that & defy the odds to show other underground artists there is a way to make it without radio play.
