Q&A With Rising Brooklyn Based Hip Hop Artist CRVCK

Hey CRVCK! Much respect on your new EP. We appreciate solid music, especially from true up and coming MC’s. Please tell me how long have you been rapping? Where are you from? Do you remember where you were at exactly when you wrote your first track!!??

Well I’ve been writing raps since I was like 8 years old and most of them were really violent so my parents didn’t like it and they were kinda concerned at first. But I was always infatuated with the idea of being a rapper since I could remember. I’m from Brownsville Brooklyn New York but then I moved to Long Island around age 13. Same difference though, I never cared about my location because it all felt the same. I was in my friend Akila’s house recording a remix to Ice Cream by Wu tang clan and it was really trash.

We have to ask, how did you come up with your artist name!?  We hate to sound cliche, but it really does stand out!!

I came up with my rap name because my grandmother, grandfather, and some of my other family members were addicted to crack. My dad sold crack and went to jail for it so I figured sell crack too. But like musically, I want you to hear one song and be addicted to me and my fucked up way of making music.

Your style and rhyme scheme is super raw and different! Reminds me of Tyler, the Creator!! How do you describe you sound? How long did it take for you to find your sound?

My sound is random for the most part, I’m still finding myself musically. I have bigger ambitions for how want my music to sound so I just keep striving for that which each project I work on in hopes to one day satisfy myself. I would describe my sound as emotional, cold and semi-thought provoking when you listen closely.

Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences? Any Illinois influences? Was there anyone in your life that motivated you to STEP IT UP when it comes to making dope Hip Hop?

My musical influences include Earl Sweatshirt, Kanye West, Wu Tang Clan, Tyler the Creator, Andre 3000 and Tommy Wright the 3rd. My friend Yugao Breeze of 48 Phantom was the person who showed me that you can really expand your creativity with this music shit. I was just rapping to be a good rapper and I always wanted to take it further and be more than that. He showed me how far I could take it so I owe him everything for just that.

Please breakdown the creative process of your latest EP “AN ODE TO SHE”.

I didn’t intentionally make songs for “An Ode to She” but I made 4 beats in the beginning and I wrote out 4 songs to them. They all had something to do with my frustration and my own loneliness. In this point in my life I hated myself for not being able to find anything or anyone to love and care for besides drugs and music. The songs mainly stem from my fear of rejection coupled with my fear of heartbreak. The thought of love was never pure to me, I always saw it as violent and perverted, but then again I have never been in love before so I guess I only had my assumptions. I recorded most of the tape on acid and some of it was freestyled, and I was super hyped up and focused when I made Ode to She (the single), Heather and Samantha. Hannah and the rest I did semi sober ( don’t do drugs kids). I just let all of it seem like I was a loose cannon and that’s what I wanted you to feel.

What are you looking forward to for 2018? Anything you going to be doing differently compared to past years?

I will be doing a little bit more singing but still rapping more. I’ll be working with more rappers, singers and different producers other than myself and Yugao who help me produce Samantha and Shauna.

Any new projects coming out!?

Working on “Death of the Internet”, which is a tape with me, Yugao Breeze and Flv.co from Broward county, Florida. I recently dropped a song produced by Bass Santana of “Members Only”. I will also be doing a tape with Cincinnati rapper Ave2brave who is probably one of my favorite rappers right now. I also will be coming out with another ep by myself that will be absolutely insane.

Rappers nowadays think by throwing up a few videos up on social media and pushing quick projects, they can blow up overnight! Give us your view on how over saturated the market is right now with so many MC’s/Producers but not to many quality music.

I personally wouldn’t mind how saturated rap is getting if people were trying their best to put forth an original idea in any way but most end up looking up a type beat and cranking up the auto tune. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with type beats though, because I’ve used a few before I learned how to make my own. It honestly doesn’t matter what you do nowadays, the respect doesn’t lye in the music. it’s all about aesthetic and how much drugs you do. I do drugs but I don’t rap about them often; I feel like it’s a topic that doesn’t even matter because so many people get high.

How often do you perform LIVE? Any shows lined up in the near future?

I have performed live and I think I’m gonna take a break from it until i cultivate a larger fanbase. Performing now is just people looking into me directly in my eyes, nodding their heads and I’m on stage rapping about killing women.

Where do you see yourself in 5yrs time?

I see myself making music still and trying to perfect it before I leave this earth. It’s the only thing I can say I truly care about. I don’t really have a plan for anything else but I know I want that to be something I accomplish before I die.

Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?

Underground hip hop is the rawest form of hip hop. There is nothing like it and there is nothing better than it. Most underground rappers are the best rappers out like right now. I love the underground scene, it’s what I grew up on.
