Random Humans – Q&A Interview
Tell us a little about yourselves. Where is the group from? How long have you been making Hip Hop together?
We are Random Humans. One part DECEPTION (MC) and one part NOAH THE MIND (Producer/dj). We started making music in Vancouver but are now living in Calgary where we both grew up. We’ve been making music together for about 5 years.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
Everything and anything! A few instrumental influences include psychedelic, alternative and metal music. Vocal influences come from whatever is pissing off Deception at that moment in time. Deception likes to point out the system flaws of our society in a way that everyone can relate to and understand. The most amazing part about Hip Hop music is being able to encompass so many different styles and feelings depending on the mood.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other Hip Hop groups?
We tend to lean towards a darker, harder sound while remaining completely individual. In a flooded market of producers and rappers, we would say 95% of the music everyone is making in our genre sounds like the dudes who are already hot. I guess when it comes down to it we just don’t use the same samples as most and the lyrical content is definitely more abstract than most. Your not going to understand our music by listening to it once or twice but the different sound tends keep the people coming back for more.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?
Our collaboration list is mainly compiled of musicians with instrument features and our producer Rob Shallcross. We had one vocal collab with Sunspot Jonz of Living Legends on our last record “Over Your Head” on a song called “Where Did You Come From”. Jim Bennett did all the live bass guitar work on “Over Your Head”. Rob Shallcross is an extremley talented producer/engineer/mixer and he’s been with us since the beginning of Random Humans. He’s a big name in the Metal scene and also a JUNO award winner. Rob set us up with Jim Bennett and he also enlisted Justin Hagberg (3 inches of Blood) and Vincent Price (Body Count) to feature on the Kamikaze EP. We don’t see any major vocal collabs in the near future we’re just focussed on our own unique sound and trying to bring that sound to as many people as possible.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
The term underground is a tough one. I think if you haven’t had commercial success that might consider you in the realm of “underground hip hop”.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
There are way to many people to name who inspire us. Right now it’s the people in our life and the ones who support our music. They inspire us to keep making shit, period! Noah The Mind and Rob Shallcross are the production wizards. We would love to work with a million different artists and producers. Theres so much talent out there!
Any current or future projects you are promoting?
KAMIKAZE EP OUT NOW lol We just dropped it about 5 weeks ago. It’s raw, its original, check it out!
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of KAMIKAZE? How was the Video Shoot experience and were there any set backs while shooting or was everything running smooth?
We just start creating demos. Noah The Mind will make a beat, pass it to Deception. Once Deception writes it then we make the demo. From there we send it to Rob, our “outside” ear, which I think more groups/artists need. Sometimes you need to be told that song was wack…….. next! From there we jump into the studio with our best tracks and start cleaning it up and making it a finished product.
The video shoot in Las Vegas went great! We shot both Kamikaze and Tension in 2 days which was a fairly quick process but it went perfectly. Besides the heat everything was awesome. The Director (Brandon Christensen) and his crew are amazingly talented and on point. Plus Noah The Mind won $400 playing the slots haha!
Where can we find your music and info?
Our music can be found on iTunes, Youtube, Soundcloud, our homepage THERANDOMHUMANS.COM and of course at our live shows! Stay tuned for more Canadian tour dates for 2014 and hopefully some American dates end of year or spring 2015.
Any shout outs?
BIG shout out to UGHHblog, thanks for having us and BIG shouts to every human that supports us! Thank you.
