RTST– Q&A Interview

Dj's Warehouse Shoot
-Lets give the audience a taste of where you are from and how your stage name RTST was originated from?
Where i’m from? Worcester Massachusetts born and raised. The name RTST came about one day in art school. I was actually talking to a friend about getting back into the graffiti game but i was looking for a new name. The only thing i could think of was i’m an artist. But to have a name like that sucks. Had to make it original so i took the a and the i out of artist and if you pronounce RTST as R-TST it sounds like artist.
-Who are your influences in music, or in life in general?
My influences in music and life is just that music and life. I can get inspired from anything. A picture, the way a song feels, something i hear, literally anything. Musically my biggest influences in music have to be Nas, Mac Miller, Lil Wayne, Logic and Waldo. In life my biggest influence and inspiration is my mother. She is the strongest person i know. Food For Thought is actually dedicated to her.
-Did you always listen to Hip Hop, or are there any other styles of music you listen to?
I first was introduced to hip-hop by my father. When i was growin up my parents listened to country music but then they got divorced and my dad started playing some hip-hop. I remember one day he picked me up from school or something like that and he had 50 Cents Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and Fabolous Street Dreams playin in his truck. I lost my mind. Fell in love that day. Ever since then ive opened myself to all hip-hop. I don’t listen to too much country anymore its just not my style. Other than hip-hop i listen to all genres. Other artists i listen to…Frank Sinatra, Herb Alperts, Blink-182, Sango, Ta-Ku, TNGHT, Dilla, Tech N9ne, & Bob Marley. Iim really just a music addict and ill listening to anything as long as it vibes and has a good message to it.
-Your new album “Food For Thought”.  In a few sentences, what would you like the listeners to gain out of it?

Knowledge. Music is a way of uplifting, and educating people. I tell some true stories, have some good vibe out music and some hype music. Theres something for everyone on this project. I just think its time to put the message back into hip-hop. Which some artists are doing now. Im trying to make something deeper than rap.

-Production wise, and mixing, who worked with you on the project?
Producers on this project include Dvnko, MistaSmth, TezzYoXo, DJ Nass, and Zander. Everyone did their thing. Zander is the name i go under for production and i actually produced around half of Food For Thought. Mixing, mastering, writing and recording was all done by myself.
-Anything lined up in the near future?
Near future releases. I could drop another full length tomorrow if i wanted. I never sleep so i work on music every moment i can. I rather work towards my dreams then sleep and watch others live my dreams. I have so much music done i lose track of it then find it one day and i sit there like shit i forgot about this imma redo this one and drop it. I wrote six songs last night, probably going to record them after this.
-Our highlight question!  What is your definition of underground hip hop?
Underground hip-hop is the truth. Its not worried about radio play and trying to get every listener to love it. Its about speaking what is true and meaningful. The ups, the downs and the struggles. Talk about what means something to you and something people can relate to and rock with. Music that can help take the pain away.
