Var Francis – Q&A Interview
When did you decide to start making Hip Hop? Who influenced you? How did you get the name, Var Francis?
The name Var Francis comes from the pronunciation of my birth name Devor Francis. I started rapping at the age 11. I completely stop making music at the age 21 and starting making music again at the age 26. Hip hop has always been popular in my neighborhood. I heard my brother rapping one day and I heard his friend Lex Masters rapping and then I just tried it and fell in love instantly. I also performed a LL cool J song when I was 6yrs old. It was for a school show. It’s safe to say to do that at that age and not be shy and freeze up means I was born to do music. Unfortunately I don’t have the footage. I’m pretty sure when I get famous it will pop up somewhere lol.
What specific area City/State do you rep? Who has the local Hip Hop community accepted your music and movement?
I was raised in Astoria Queens, NYC. To be honest I just rep NY as a whole. Repping your hood I think is part of the problem with NYC hip hop. It creates division in my opinion. So far college students and 9-5 workers are accepting my music. The hood is starting to accept my music more because that’s where I’m from and for them I want to be an example of how you don’t have to sell drugs to be consider “popping.” I’m showing people there are other routes.
Congrats on the success of your latest EP, “Pay To The Order Of”. Feel free to break down the creative process of the project. (features, production, etc).
My writing process? I love this question! Being that I work 70 hours a week, I don’t have time to sit down and write verses. I usually create them in my head while I’m driving. I also think of bars and songs while I’m at work. The cool thing is I did not physically write any song on my debut EP. It was all created in my head. When I do have the opportunity I do put my thoughts on paper though. I’m planning on physically writing my debut album. And I don’t have a schedule. I usually make music when I’m going through something (good or bad) or when I’m straight up just board. Sometimes I’m inspired by some of the garbage on the radio as well lol.
Who are you top 5 MC & Producers?
This not in order but Tupac, Jay Z, J Cole, JadaKiss, Pharrel.
Planning on releasing any videos to complement your latest EP?
I will be releasing a video to Gorgeous, Celebrity, and Why You Talking to Me.
What are your plans for getting your music out of your city and let it circulate throughout the nation?
I’m currently using social media. I also have a marketing team I’m working with.
Are you looking forward to working with other artists near you? Or do you try to keep collabs at a minimum?
I try to keep the collabs at a minimum. Nowadays everybody just does songs with anybody. Yea you could be hot but if you’re a child molester in your spare time then I would not want to be on a song with and risk damaging my product.
