Album Review: “Modest Confidence” by Gavlyn (Los Angeles, CA)
Coming back from her Euro Tour, and approaching the 2nd Annual Hip Hop Pow Wow during SXSW, what better time to drop an album review to Gavlyn’s newest project released by DJ Hoppa’s indie label Broken Complex, “Modest Confidence”. With 13 tracks front to back there was not one song that sounded the same, which most full length project currently lack. With the diversity of lyrical style and wordplay Gavlyn delivers on every track, it’s hard to believe anybody wouldn’t become an instant fan. With only 2 collabs with MCs EQ, and Uncle Dee on the album, the diverse styles of beats used and the production credits to this project is also something worth highlighting. With production credits from well known SoCal Vets DJ Hoppa, DJ Dubplates, EQ + many more beat makers from around the world, with so much respect we have for dope producers, we always look forward to listen original beats alongside hard hitting rhymes. Every beat and sample used compliments the creative style that only Gavlyn could bring, bar to bar.
Still a young MC, if you have been following her for a while, we could all def see the maturity, and growth as an MC in this new project. Besides her new album, non-stop work schedule coming back from her latest Euro tour, more music videos set to release, it’s really influential to see a solid MC come out of Cali not only touching the locals, but the rest of the world with her growing online presence, and organic fan base.
With this solid album in front of us, it was difficult to highlight 3 songs like we usually do. If we had our choice, the 3 would be: “1. Modest Confidence” and “11. Take Over” – prod. by 3rdEye. Both songs show her unique flows over high energetic beats. The third track would be “4. Guilty Pleasure” – prod. by Figub Brazlevic, a song that she also releases a video too.
We highly recommend “Modest Confidence” to all Hip Hop fans! “One of the only few albums of 2014 so far that has a true Hip Hop feel to it front to back”. – @UGHHBLOG
