LAZ – “Just To Get By” (Mixtape Review)
Up-and-coming Parisian-Belgian-American underground recording artist LAZ drops his new mixtape titled, ‘Just To Get By’. Backed by the popularity of his custom English/French rhymes over boom-bap productions, Laz style from storytelling of his everyday routine, to dreamy tales of a jaguar, to strong political views.
‘Just To Get By’ is a 7-track collective that presents an unpredictable new sound from the multi-cultural phenomenon. The tracklist contains breakout tracks, heavy drums, and speedy wordplay that targets both Americans and Frenchmen. Energetic, proud, and noble, Laz test himself by trail of fire and pass flawlessly.
On the project, Laz contemplates his personal issues and how they are effected by the world’s current events. Often confused on feelings and curious by the world’s point-of-view, Laz is at a crossroad as a multi-cultured citizen and allows his words to express the direction he will head in next. A feeling relatable by millions of today’s peers that suffer the same confusion daily.

Relying heavily on 808 can a pitfall for the up-and-coming artist, appear to be one dimensional. While enjoyed by the common trendy fan, it masks the potential of Laz and how deep his skills can go. Playing it safe can prohibit Laz unique talent’s growth. Identifying the rising star as simply a one-trick pony over time. This time around it engages the audience attention; however, can it keep the audience attention next time?
‘Just To Get By’ production is impactfully decent throughout the entire project. Majority handled by talented producer Boni, handling five of the seven tracks, Boni’s signature sound shines brightest on “Land of Freedom”. Sticking to accustom 808 production that the average consumer enjoys, Laz also shine bright on the Sam Irving collaborative, “The Lost and Found”. Nice work on the production side, Laz is comfortable to flex without zero restraint.
