Mitch Penn – “Southside” (Album Review)
Jamaica Queens artist Mitch Penn drops “SOUTHSIDE” Lp style album dedicated to the life lessons and the stomping grounds he grew up in. The 1st thing I noticed about this album was the mature lyrical content, it seems to always have a lesson behind the intention even if you can’t see it right away. The album is a cross between hard turn up beats and boom pap trap classics.
The album begins with abstract vibes from the new age HIP-HOP cut”Blankin”dedicated to capturing the mind with real life lyrics and mellow vibes. Especially impressed with the unique rhyme scheme and composure of the composition. The album continues with “Dark Cloud” produced by Da-P, the beat sets the tempo for a high energy war zone as Mitch Penn drops lyrics under rapid fire showcasing his Emcee skills. “Cringe” did just that, the bars were intense and changed tempo on the drop of a dime , it keeps the listener wanting more never knowing what to expect. “Cringe” was still substance based, the concept of the song discusses the state of mother nature and the state of HIP-HOP.
“Fly Open” produced by Fridaytha13th radiated a new energy different from all the other songs, giving it a new aspect and powerful element to the dynamic of the tape. Mitch Penn shows off a new side to him and his music, letting go of what people might think and just being himself. “Filmore” is a party song for the suburban kids, I can see this appealing to the Coachella crowd effortlessly due to it’s festival vibes. “Don’t Trick” produced by The Alchemist is again a TU song with an important message on how to be a boss and offer possibilities instead of money. “I.T.B” produced by DVNBEATS featuing JL the hard bars from both sides of the song creates an underground hitter.
“Foch” comes right back with classic vibes featuring Kash. This was my favorite song from the album as the truth inside the lyrics can’t be ignored, not only can you feel the pain but the insightful approach to not understanding everything in life shows the maturity of the artist. “Drop 6” produced by Virtuso the God continues with some more Trap HIPHOP, the balance of this album continues to flip from one side to the other showing why this album is for music lovers period. Mitch Penn keeps the train rolling with “Mayweather” putting his inner most thoughts on paper implying none of it can actually phase him because he can’t be hit like “Mayweather”.
“YSL” produced by Da-P reminds me of Big Sean mixed with Logic, the flow produces a fun loving dynamic, the visual is created by your mind when the beat drops as Mitch Penn sketches out the full picture of “SOUTHSIDE”. “Free Throw” produced by Skinny Mooxe honors the G-Code and stature showing the benefits of having the connections of the streets, Skinny Mooxe sets the atmosphere for the next song in rotation, “Workers Anthem” is a melodic soul track for the ladies aimed at the diva women in the world this adds new emotions to the compilation once again expanding the reach to the audience. The album concludes as “Reach In” is the last song on the track list and for good reason, it finishes the album as strong as it began with universal approach and appeal, Follow Mitch Penn for news & music updates.
