Potent Da Rockstar – “Numb Jesus” EP (Review)
Jersey based artist Potent Da Rockstar gives us a glimpse of his mind through his project “Numb Jesus.”
The EP starts off immediately on a strong note with solid production. Every beat Po uses is well crafted and expressive on its own, carrying a dark but accessible atmosphere throughout the entire project.
Potent’s first track, “Numb Jesus,” is an attempt to showcase his lyrical ability, and he does a fairly good job of it. I wouldn’t say he’s a punchline rapper, however. About half of his punchlines fall a little flat to me, but that should not overshadow his creativity or writing capabilities. Good punchlines are hard to come by.
Potent’s second track, “So Real,” is an anthem for self-made success, being defined as achieving your dreams. This could very well be the best song on the project. My only real complaint is that for someone who can clearly write well, why does a nearly four minute long track only have about 21 different lines? That’s actually s common thread through the rest of the EP as well. Potent seems to bank on his choruses more than his verses. For somebody who wants to be viewed as a lyrical artist, there is a lack of content that would support that idea. The meat of a song should, in my opinion, be the verses. That is when an artist can express their thoughts, or flex their penmanship thoroughly. His vocabulary is outstanding in comparison to many artists out there, both mainstream and underground, which is why I was kind of disappointed by all the repetition in the project. Potent Da Rockstar just needs to utilize that vocabulary and his unique flow to his advantage more, then he become a truly noteworthy artist.
