SCRIBEMECCA – “Yungpatronas: Dedication to DJ Grumble” (Album Review)

The album, “Yungpatronus,” by SCRIBEMECCA isn’t the type of project you would blast out of your car. It isn’t the type of album that challenges any sort of political, social, or industry related status quo. It also isn’t the type of album that plays to your emotional side. Simply put, it’s just a good album, and all the better for it.

There isn’t really that much for me to break down. The entire album flows seamlessly, and at no point did it feel like Scribe was trying too hard, or not trying at all. It seemed as though he was making music simply because he loves to. That passion for what he does is evident. The overall vibe of this project is upbeat and fun, a stark contrast to the majority of hard hitting, gritty sounds often heard in Rap today. In many cases, throwing interludes into a project would detract from the overall quality of it, but not here. Scribe keeps them short and entertaining. While I wouldn’t say he displays top tier penmanship on the album, he still brings a lot of creativity to the table, and his writing ability should definitely be respected. Scribe understands the concept of flow incredibly well, and the best of what I’ve reviewed so far.

The production on Yungpatronus is great. It’s so different from what you would normally hear from anything in Hip Hop today, be it a small independent artist or a signed mainstream one. Every instrumental has either acoustic sounds or a dreamy kind of synth that dares you to resist bobbing your head to it.

My only beef with the album is in the first couple of songs. The choruses have this layered sound to them, like Scribe wanted auto tune without actually making it sound like traditional autotune. While I do prefer it over the way other artists I’ve reviewed have done their choruses, it still sounds a bit too much like shouting and ended up grating on the ears just a little bit. However, this is literally the only thing I can fault the album on.

Yungpatronus is a departure from the norm. It doesn’t do anything but vibe. However, you’d be hard pressed to find a better album to vibe to than what SCRIBEMECCA has put out. This is an album I would actually keep saved on my Spotify, and you should too.
