Innate & EP are 2/3 of the Southern California based hip hop group, Rock Bottom (EP, Innate, Bumps the Goosegot). They have been making music together since the early 2000s, but things really fell into motion in 2007, when they were picked up by the underground hip hop record label, Raw Poetix Records. During their time there, they were featured on Global Connection Vol. 1 (2007), a compilation album, alongside artists such as Pace Won, Promoe of The Looptroop, and KRS-ONE, and released their first studio LP, Expanding the Cage, as Rock Bottom, in 2009.
After touring their album, and getting a better idea of what life was like as a musician on the road, individual priorities sent them in different directions. Innate spent time in Austin, TX, furthering his production skills, collecting records, and soaking in the music scene. EP stuck around California, finishing up school, studying music theory, and learning how to play the piano. The unofficial hiatus lasted until 2012, when the two decided to combine their skills and personal experiences for a new album, “Such as I”, that they
released May 9th, 2013. Combining live instruments and the sampling of records is not a new concept by any means , but Innate and EP have definitely managed to go about it in their own way. The two have been heavily influenced by the contents of their crates, which range anywhere from funk and soul, to rock and psychedelic folk. They have focused on the maturing of their song writing and melodies just as much as their production, which ends up leaving listeners with a uniquely fresh approach to good old fashion boom bap hip hop.
