YP – “Backwood Jones” Mixtape
For Chicago rapper YP, art truly does reflect real life. The 27-year-old hip-hop artist has spent his last year working on Backwood Jones, but the month of August appeared ready to derail his dream.
Two weeks ago, on August 10 YP lost his son Kaiden suddenly and unexpectedly. Last week, on August 18, he had family members involved in a nationally-covered hostage situation in Harvey, IL and over the weekend his pet dog passed away.
They say bad things come in threes and YP is looking to put his pain behind him with his latest project which could well prove to be his breakthrough release featuring Twista, Rockie Fresh, King Louie, KAM, Salaiman & Assata Jones. YP plays with Nipsey Hussle and King Louie on 8/19 at African Fest in Washington Park and 9/4 at Mojoe’s in Joliet with Lil Bibby.
One of the first artists to be signed from Chicago’s ‘Hip-Hop Renaissance’ YP inked a deal with Universal/Republic in 2011 after receiving encouraging co-signs from the likes of Nas, Q-Tip and Raekwon, among others. Now on the independent tip, YP is looking to re-establish himself with Backwood Jones, regardless of the issues that have stood in his way.
YP has been busy lately, this week dropping his visual for “Stop” with Chicago legend Twista and has been steadily preparing for the project’s drop today.
