Music Marketing Book

Do You Know Where You’re Going?

“I find it fascinating that most people plan their vacation with better care than they plan their lives. Perhaps that is because escape is easier than change”
– Jim Rohn (Motivational Speaker, Author)

Trying to “make it” in the music industry as a recording artist is difficult. It takes years to establish yourself and build a fan base, but most importantly it takes great music to make it. Aside from the fact that it may take years to live off of your music, it also requires a plan. So, how do you come up with the right plan for your career path? A great place to start is with the book “Music Marketing for the DIY Musician” by Bobby Borg.

Let me begin by giving you a little insight about the author. In 2006, I attended Musicians Institute (MI) in Hollywood and attended the music business course, while there, one of my teachers was Bobby Borg. Bobby wears many hats in the music industry; as a recording artist he helped write and record music with the rock group Warrant, recorded with Beggars and Thieves, and also formed the alternative rock band Left for Dead. Bobby also contributes to major industry panels for SXSW, Taxi Road Rally, and Berklee College of Music. In addition to being an instructor at MI, he’s also an instructor at UCLA Extension. He is a writer for publications such as Modern Drummer and Music Connection. I can further expand on the credentials of Bobby Borg, but feel that his work in “Music Marketing for the DIY Musician” will help bridge that gap.

As an audio engineer, I am often asked about marketing and ways to help promote up-and-coming artists. In this book, Bobby lays out concepts and strategies to formulate plans of attack to help get your music career moving forward and in the right direction. His vast experience serves as the foundation to help you maneuver through the maniacal maze known as the music industry. Throughout the years, Bobby has counseled many different artists and through his new book, he can help you build the right plan of attack as well.

In my own journey as an audio engineer and business owner, I am consistently investing in my own growth. This may entail asking questions in an online forum, watching a video, picking up a book or magazine, and attending seminars. I have invested substantially in my education, just as much as I have in my audio equipment. I have made it my business to become a lifelong learner, which is something that I picked up from Bobby in my studies at MI.

I want to thank Bobby Borg for including my company, AgruvStudios, in the “Develop Your Company’s Brand Strategy” chapter of his new book. Without his encouragement I may never have taken the steps I needed to develop my own brand. Thank you Bobby.

What’s up underground hip hop heads! My name is Alex, as an audio engineer I go by Agruv. UnderGroundHipHopBlog (UGHHB) has given me the opportunity to contribute weekly tips about the music industry. Although my background is in audio engineering, I did start out as a musician in high school and attended Musicians Institute (MI) in Hollywood. During my year at MI, I studied music business, which allowed me to see first hand how the industry works.

My weekly topics will mainly cover audio engineering, which will include recording, mixing, and mastering. I may occasionally cover topics such as networking, marketing, collaboration, and some philosophical ramblings from time to time.

Again, I’d like to thank UGHHB for this great opportunity. I hope I get to work with you guys on any recording, mixing, and mastering projects. But more importantly, I hope you gain some knowledge and understanding about the industry, make some dope music and take your career to the next level.
