Dougie Drew – Q&A Interview
Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?
Well my name is Dougie drew, in case you didn’t know. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, North or “Metro” Phoenix to be exact.I’m a Dope Emcee and the class president of Academy Records. I’ve basically been making music for as long as i can remember. I use to sing for my church growing up, and I always found myself freestyling over the band during break downs and solos. I wrote my first “Hip-Hop” track in the 3rd grade, and have been creating music ever since.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
The music I create is inspired by many different things. Life experiences, friendships, relationships, testimonies, other creative minds, and the list goes on. As far as artist who inspire me, I rock with Andre 3 Stacks, Jay-z , Dougie Fresh, Kanye, [Carter 2] Wayne, & Ludacris just to name a few.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?
I don’t like to describe my music to listeners. I’d rather my art describe itself. Never the less, I’ve been told i make “feel good” music or “real life music”. In my opinion I’m just one extremely talented artist who has relatable rhyme schemes, intellectual content [If you listen], but can still get jiggy on a track.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?
I have yet to collaborate with artist who are “buzzing” in the underground hip hop world. Up to this point, most collaborations have been local, or within the Academy franchise. I would not mind collaborating with Dizzy Wright, Sir Michael Rocks, Casey Veggies, Rockie Fresh, Travis Scott, or any other Young Nxgka getting it.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
I think the definition of underground hip hop has changed over the years. In today’s society, underground hip hop and independent hip hop are placed under the same umbrella. Because of this, underground hip hop is beginning to expand more rapidly than some would like.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
I’m a real hip hop cat, so I love Swizz beats , Just blaze, Kanye, Timbaland, guys who really impacted the hip hop culture with their own individual sound. Each of these producers were able to create a “vibe” with specific artist that they worked with, and I would love to have that chemistry with multiple producers in the future.
Any current or future projects you are promoting?
Currently I am finalizing the second installment to my “Airplane Mode” mixtape series entitled “Airplane Mode: Extended Flights”. I am planning to drop the project early December. The first installment of Airplane Mode can be found at [http://www.datpiff.com/Dougie-Drew-Airplanemode-mixtape.355328.html]
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of “Air It Out”? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Single Cover Art.
The concept of “Air it out” came about one day when I walked in the house smelling like #AirItOut, and my little brother told me “Dougie you need to air out”. . ha basically
