Joaquin Garcia – Q&A Interview
Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?
I’m Puerto Rican from Brooklyn, NY, a junior at Edward R. Murrow High School and I have always been into rap music. II started rapping by free-styling when I was 6 years old. People started telling me I was really good so I was like, “Let me start making songs.”
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
My daily experiences, being able to express myself in my verses and to compose my feelings into a song. In 4th grade “Tha Carter 3” came out and that was the first time I knew rapping was what I was going to do.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?
My music is how I’m feeling at the time. I want the people who are listening to have a good time while they are listening to it. I also incorporate a lot of my interests into my raps, such as sports and history. You can hear it in a lot of my metaphors and punchlines. I am able to take my favorite moments in history or even small moments that are iconic to me, and put them into my bars in a way that has you thinking.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?
I’ve collaborated members of my group, Kings of the Tribe: GrandSims and Nasir. I’ve also collaborated with Jet Commander on a song called “Black Sun,” and $hakon on “Deion Sanders.” I have a collaboration with Perry Boi from CBM coming soon.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
Underground Hip Hop is Hip Hop that is coming up and being made by real people. They are rapping about the real things that they are experiencing and all of that is reflected in their music.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
Fendi Frado and GrandSims produce for me. When looking for beats to rap over, I like to find things that immediately hit me and set a tone right off the bat. I would like to work with any young producer who has a vision for a great project.
Any current or future projects you are promoting?
Besides promoting FUEGO, I’ve been promoting all of the songs on the Kings of the Tribe Soundcloud page. A future mixtape with GrandSims and me will be coming soon.
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of FUEGO The Music Video?
Being a Mets fan I wanted to put Citifield in there. The director, Michael Garcia, did a great job in showing me and my crew against the backdrop of some New York shit. I wanted to keep it true to who I am and what I like to do in my daily life.
