Our Q&A With Rising Hip Hop Producer Misfit Yeager
What an amazing piece of work when it comes to your new instrumental album “Tsoo-Yess”. We really enjoyed it a lot, tell us how did you decide to become a producer and get yourself involved in Hip Hop?
For me it all started in High School with my friend Brandon at like 15, we would write just angry militant teenage stuff and got kicked out of school for it. So it started with rapping but nobody in my city was good at making beats really, or at least not in the atmosphere I had in my head. But I never released any beats for public consumption until I did the “Envisage” album with Spliff shiles & Thom Baum in Seattle which was 5 or 6 years later. I really spent time not releasing anything and just honing my craft and etching out my style.
How has your music influenced your friends and family? Are they hating on you, or do they embrace your craft and respect your music and brand?
As far as family I don’t have much, but my mom has supported all of my creative energy since I was little which I’m very fortunate for. I didn’t have much but I had support. My friends who are into music like it, my friends who make music heavily fuck with it, but honestly if you’re coming up as an artist and you’re hoping that all your friends and family are going to go to all these shows or buy all your stuff you’re dead wrong. So I try to keep those things separated. I don’t really look for the approval or validation there. I want the un-biased opinion from people who don’t know or care who I am.
Feel free to breakdown the creative process of your latest album “Tsoo-Yess”. Is that you in the cover art? Where was that dope pic taken if so?
Yeah that’s me in the picture. The picture was shot up on the Olympic peninsula in Washington, and “Tsoo-Yess” is actually a place. I made most of the album living right on the beach on the Makah Reservation outside of Neah Bay last Fall/winter. I wanted it to be atmospheric and have this coastal vibe but I wanted to use deep kicks and sub bass as a counter balance. I wanted it to be an experience instead of just a beat tape. So with the cover I just wanted it to be dark and calm, and the environment just intertwines with the album to fully paint the feeling and set the tone of how the project sounds.

Do you ever rock live beat sets?
Yeah, I was doing shows with Thom baum & Spliff Shiles right when I came out to Seattle(I’m originally from Louisville, I’ve been around the country though.)
Where do you see yourself in 5yrs time?
I’m a person who likes to think realistically. So I don’t like to get big-headed and say a bunch of things that are a far reach. I will say, that in 5 years I will have only kept increasing in the skills and ethics of this game. I plot every aspect of this stuff all day long, and I keep executing my goals so…
Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
I believe it’s rooted in authenticity, the emotions you can convey to people who want to hear real shit. Like think of the word underground, it feels more like a vibe. Like people crammed into a basement with the bass up, like poetry and people are rapping about what’s going on around them, you know the police brutality, the streets, rigged elections, racism, profits for prisons, drugs, family, community, good times, materialism, etc.. But hell everything has so many sub genres these days I could just be some asshole hahaha.
