Q&A With Portland’s Powerful Underground Hip Hop Producer Meursault Beats
Hey Meursault Beats! Much respect for being a real and super solid underground Hip Hop producer! We are excited for once to shine the spotlight on a producer rather than a MC! What was the spark and motivation for you to start producing?
My motivation to start producing just comes from a really strong love of music. I have been around music my entire life because my father has always been a lead singer/guitarist in blues bands. I was always around music and listening to stuff my parents enjoyed. My parents also got me started playing music young and paid for lessons so I could learn the piano as a kid. From there I ended up learning how to play the drums, guitar and bass guitar. I love producing because it allows me to combine all of my musical skills to create fun new stuff.
Throughout your whole EP, We notice that your style of sound is extreme unique and your keep it consistent! How would you describe your production sound?
I would describe my production sound as a combination of a lot of the music that I have listened throughout my life. The drums are definitely aggressive and driving which comes from hip hop. My guitar playing comes more from the blues and maybe psychedelic rock. My music also takes a lot of inspiration from pop with its catchy melodies. So I guess I would describe my production sound as an interesting mix of those genres!
Are you a hardware producer or software producer?
I use live instruments in all of these tracks, so I guess you could call me a hardware producer. I love playing my guitar and bass and making these elements really standout in my tracks. Though, I do use software for interesting effects on these live instruments.
We are sick and tired of MC’s always taking the credit for almost every song we here!!!>>LOL And only a few producers get the label as quote on quote “Super-Producers”.. As a producer yourself, do you feel the same way about rappers? or are you the type of producer to allow the MC take the majority of the credit?
I do agree that some MC’s ride the coattails of producers a bit without giving them enough recognition. Personally, I am not too worried about getting a bunch of notoriety for tracks I sell to rappers because I am just happy making music with people.
Please breakdown the creative process of your EP.
My creative process included eating a lot of candy while working on these tracks. Without candy, I am nothing.
Out the box type question, If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.
I love the artist Zeroh. His album/mixtape awfulalterations is amazing and hasn’t gotten enough attention. I would say that is my favorite underground hip hop album of all time.
Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
Underground hip hop is hip hop that tries to do things a little differently than what you hear on the radio. The artist makes the music from a place of love instead of trying to get the most radio play.
