Q&A With Rising Underground Hip Hop Artist B-Guy Griffin

Hey B-Guy Griffin!! Much respect on your latest album?  We definitely remember you collaborating with your pops!  We appreciate your really rocking with our BLOG!  How have you been since the last time we chatted!

I have been Wonderful to say the least. We hit the ground running on this new project and I couldn’t be happier about it. Life’s been good, the weather’s been warm and I’ve gotten to spend a lot of time outdoors and in the studio.

Please brief on the emerging Idaho Hip Hop scene!?  We rarely come across Hip Hop artists from out there!  Is there even a huge seen out there? Or is it just getting started?

I’d say it’s a huge scene that is just getting started. There are a lot of artists here that have been doing their thing for many years, but it’s really started to grow into something. There are many different camps holding it down and they all have their own style that they bring to the table.

How is your pops doing?!  He really went in hard on your guys album “The Collaboratory”..

He’s doing great. He recently got a big studio upgrade and used it to completely engineer the Wonderful album. He also features on a few songs and he kills each one. He’s been there throughout the entire production of this project and he’s already joined me on stage to perform some of the songs from it.

Please breakdown the creative process of your new album “Wonderful”? I honestly can here a solid progression on this project compared to your last!

It started off when I read a book about positivity and self-improvement. It really inspired me to create something that could make others feel better by listening to. Since The Collaboratory, I have gotten into Buddhism and meditation which played a big part in a lot of the actual lyrics. I tried to be positive with every song no matter what the vibe was, and I went through so many beats looking for the right ones. None of the songs were planned, they all were developed from feeling the instrumentals and building upon them. The track list sends the listener on a journey that starts with the thesis of the album and an overall introduction of myself. It transitions into a section about things I enjoy doing like camping, partying with friends and writing music. Then it ends with some motivational style music and a bonus track to make you want to ride along and loop the album.

Any plans for new releases in late 2018?

As of now, Wonderful was the only planned release for the year but we have been working on a project for a while and that could drop at any time this year or next. It is called The MPC Sessions and will be a free mixtape. Twigg has produced every beat for the project using samples from a plethora of genres making it a really diverse and unique project. Not to mention super fun to be apart of. Twigg has been kind enough to let me on every song with him and I’m super excited for it.

Please tell us abut your mission statement regarding your music and movement.  What do you want fans to walk away with after listening to your project?  Also, please describe your sound in the simplest way possible?

The mission is to make people grateful to be alive and happy that they can listen and enjoy the music. I want someone who’s having a bad day to be able to throw it on and put a smile on their face. And for everyone who’s already happy, I want them to be able to vibe to it. I think the Griffin House sound is organic no matter what the instrumentals are because our lyrics are so truly ourselves. The flows are diverse and the beats vary, but the we put our life and our heart into every word. In its simplest description, I’d say it’s witty, positive, and upbeat, and true to hip hop roots.

“Dedication” & “Ride With Me”…..Wow straight up my favorite tracks on this album!  Please break down those two songs for us!?

Dedication is both a message to myself and the listeners. The chorus says, “there are no limitations all you need is dedication, with a bit of patience, you’ll inspire your inspirations.” I used the word “you” so the listener can relate, but this was really a reminder to myself to keep moving forward to accomplish my dreams. The verses are each a testament  on how I have remained dedicated throughout my life while giving advice to the listeners.

Ride With Me was originally a song for a contest that I entered while the album was in production. The lyrics are all over the place with crazy rhyme patterns and punch lines, but I knew that my album would be following this entry. So I wanted the overall vibe of the song to set an example of the vibe that my album was going to have. I love that my intro song is called “Ride Clean” because it’s like I tell the listener to ride along with me and listen to what’s coming and then I clear things up. I thought making it the bonus song would be smart so it could lead into the intro song if you listen to it on repeat.

How has “Underground Hip Hop” influenced your life!?  We all have our favorite underground Hip Hop artists…..

Underground hip hop influenced my life at a young age when I learned what it truly was. The term “underground” doesn’t simply mean rugged raps with boom bap beats. Underground music in general is simply music by artists like myself who haven’t quite made it yet. And in this generation with the internet, there are artists everywhere popping up. As a kid, I was big into Eminem, Tupac, Lil Wayne, Tech N9ne, etc., but that’s changed as of now. Since the height of youtube, I have watched tons of artists go from underground to the big leagues such as Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, and MGK. They all started small and just kept doing their thing until their videos got noticed. Currently, I really am enjoying Kid Quill, Thomas McDonald, Spose, and Dizzy Wright, Chris Webby, MODSUN, and so much more. Underground music reminds me that it’s possible to break the void, and it inspires me to know how many people are striving to do what I’m trying to do.
