Q&A With Rising Underground Hip Hop Artist Spread Love
Hey Spread Love! That is what life is all about!!! Spreading Love!!!! How did you came up with your MC name? What area code do your represent? What inspired you to become a Hip Hop artist?
I came up with my name after I wrote a record called “Spread Love” and afterwards me and my homies tripped out on how it would be a dope artist name. I am Spread Love because it speaks for itself, people don’t really have to ask me what my name means, you know? Its self-explanatory. I’m from San Diego, about 5 minutes away from the Mexico/USA border. What inspired me to become a hip hop artist is my passion to perform. I used to practice performing ever since I could remember, I even had a mic and a mic stand my pops bought me so I could feel more legit. I would do everything from classic rock to rap but I realized that my favorite part about it was singing the words out loud, I would try to memorize entire raps, songs and perform them even to my friends. I was like in 2nd grade when I realized the shit would be way doper if I wrote my own songs, so I started to. I was definitely more drawn to hip hop, why? I’m not too sure, but I was bumpin everything from wu-tang to j-kwon, I grew up on it.
Your style and rhyme scheme is DOPE! How do you describe you sound?
Thank you, its hard for me to describe my sound, I have a lot of different styles, but if I had to I would say my sound is raw. I like real instruments, loud raps, I like to say shit that anybody but not everybody could relate to, like random ass shit that makes people feel connected to me as a person. all the time I get feedback on different songs, people telling me how it’s helped them get thru some times or how they especially felt a track for a certain reason, but it’s never the same song, so there’s some special raw shit, in each one of my tracks, or in my sound.
Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences? Any local city influences? Also, with a twist of the question, how do you feel about being able to influence FANS all across the nation with your music. As we all know, we were all influenced through music for sure!
My biggest musical influence is Florence + The Machine. Other than that I am influenced by Nas, Big L, Bob Marely, lots of stuff but those are my heart and soul right there. Being able to influence people across the map is a powerful and humbling feeling. I’m just glad people like my music!
Please breakdown the creative process of your latest album ““Love Triangles”“. Our contributor Cthree really enjoyed your album, on his review he rated it 9/10!!! NOT BAD AT ALL!!! Much respect on that rating!!
Yeah I saw that, thank you I’m very appreciative of the love!!! Making the album started when i was recovering from surgery, I started writing. Flawless Tracks has always been one of my top favorite producers of all time, ever since the SoundClick days! I spent like 5 hours going thru every beat he had on his catalog (there were hundreds, like 800, if not more) and I picked out the beats for the album, the only track that doesn’t apply to is Mason Jars. I had that track up the sleeve for a while and it just so happened to be produced by flawless as well so i threw it on the album, it’s also a personal favorite of mine! kinda wondering how Cthree skipped it on the review, but oh well its still love! I finished all my recording and had my guy Kevin Ochoa mix and master it all.
Any new projects coming out!?
I’ve dropped a mixtape called “hmm…puff” produced by Spliff. He’s a beast on the beats. It’s on soundcloud and youtube, just search “hmm…puff spread love” I dropped it on 4/20. I have a grip of singles and videos in the works right now as well.
Rappers nowadays think by throwing up a few videos up on social media and pushing quick projects, they can blow up overnight! Give us your view on how over saturated the market is right now with so many MC’s/Producers but not to many quality music.
Well I mean I’ve literally seen that shit happen with my own 2 eyes, it’s the truth. all it takes is 1 song. 1 song and a major plug.
How often do you perform LIVE? Any shows lined up in the near future?
I perform like, every other month, give or take. My next scheduled show is August 4th in San Diego.
What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
Hip hop that is not mainstream, hidden gems, real.
