BeenOfficial – “No Shorts” Ft. BlakSeed (Video/Single Review)
BeenOfficial‘s “No Shorts” music video comes out swinging and pulls no punches. The song is a gritty description of BeenOfficial’s hustle, relating his desire and efforts to take no losses in said hustle. BlakSeed delivers a catchy and fitting hook, and Official flexes in the booth lyrically. Overall, the song is engaging, to the point, and has some solid bars.
The purpose of a music video is to do at least one of two things as it pertains to its corresponding song; enhance the message, or make the song more engaging to listen to. “No Shorts” neatly manages to do both. Every second of the four and a half-minute video is deliberately dark and aggressive, complementing the song almost perfectly. The theme of taking no losses is depicted just shy of flawlessly through the vengeance taken out on the man who set up Official. Though the “twist” ending is not terribly surprising, it still adds a chunk of flare and depth to the visuals.
The video isn’t perfect, but neither are music videos with the budget of small Hollywood feature films. The acting feels a little bit forced and corny, like when Official’s girl tells him that she knows “who got [them].” The delivery of her lines will not likely win her an Oscar any time soon. For the sake of nitpicking, how did she acquire this information in the first place? Regardless, these small complaints of mine do not detract form the quality of the music video all that much. The point is still made, the story still comes full circle, and the job gets done.
Good song, even better video.
