YXVNGTAYLOR – “Selfish” Ft. So Low (Single Review)
You only get one chance at a first impression. Today, we are introduced to new Los Angeles recording artist YXVNGTAYLOR as he aims to impress with his debut single, “Selfish”.
“Selfish” is a debut that reflects on Taylor’s self-motivated rise in this hustle we call Hip-Hop. Stacking his bread, with aspirations of whipping foreigns and living the lavish life, Taylor doesn’t forget that he built his empire with his own two and by his lonesome. Best of all, accomplishing a goal and not having to credit anyone but me, myself, and I.

From a production point-of-view, the mood is grime, ideal for the concept of the song. However, the production doesn’t provide waves of elements beyond the drums. The tone is catchy but often overwhelms the track that is responsible due in part to the track’s lyricism. Production alone, the song has relevancy and has some real cashe.
Lyrically, “Selfish” doesn’t have substance to it. It lacks depth with a surface level flow and pace. While straight to the point, the track doesn’t rise any excitement or feeling, it’s a story that has been told before that haters are jealous of success; however, this is Taylor’s debut, therefore, watering down the message. Dissecting the lyrics, where is the rage, the anger, even a non-chalant attitude in the wordplay? The entire two-minutes, we await to hear the crafty creativity rhymes from the rising star that never show.
It’s so much more to the song in the ideal concept. Dark and frustrating, Taylor shows passion but we are looking more essence from Taylor’s rhymes. With his talent, Taylor needs to dig deeper with his lyrics to indulge the connection between him and the fans.
“Selfish” carries a vibe but it’s delivers a mediocre hook and lyricism that is already repetitively used by high-profile artists. Leaving YxvngTaylor barely any room to progress without being compared to established new artists. With that being said, the up-and-coming artist must be more personal with his music to grab the attention from fans and reveal the potential we catch glimpses of on “Selfish”. Coming out the gate, we need to know YxvngTaylor story and what makes him so unique or why we should follow him. We don’t get that impression on “Selfish”; however, with the release of more music, maybe we will discovered what we missed the first time around.
It’s easy to notice that YXVNGTAYLOR is a slow evolve and is rooting himself right now with a lot of potential of growth. Time will only tell.
