Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Rayna Zemel is one of the very few established female producers and sound engineers within the local music scene. Many women in the music industry have notoriously been intimidated by studio work and all its technical knowledge requirements, but Rayna finds it all really stimulating, taking pride in representing a handful of brave women leading the charge against a maledominated side of the industry.
Originally from Philadelphia, Rayna developed a fondness for music at a very early age. To pursue her passion and musical interests, Rayna picked up her first guitar and so began a colorful and satisfying music career. Her first experiences led her to become a member of a surf / punk group based in Vermont, Workingmans Army. But it was only after a while that this talented, young artist found her true musical calling: producing! The studio side of music eventually surpassed Rayna´s interest in performances, winning her over completely . Overtime, Rayna developed a very special style of her own, unique in its own right. Her music can be described as a well balanced compromise between Hip Hop and Electro, with tight grooves and massive hooks. One of the trademark elements in Rayna´s production is her meticulous attention to details in her tracks. Everything in her mixes is dosed correctly, creating powerful sounding songs that truly stand out from the crowd.
Every element in Rayna´s mixes is placed where it is for a reason, and absolutely nothing is taken for granted when it comes to her productions. If you were to describe Rayna´s production work with one single word only, my choice would definitely be “Balance”. A song features many elements and there are so many factors to keep into account: frequency range of instruments and vocals, pitch, arrangement of the song…in Rayna´s works, these elements are all well placed on s technical point of view, but the great thing is that this producer does not make the mistake of falling into the technical side too much, giving that dynamic and energetic push to the songs that only a human performance can give. Music is a complex art, yet it is intrinsically a very simple one. It is the art of arranging sound and silence in a melodic, rhythmic way, but it is also a mean of expression for human beings. It is the most common vehicle of emotions, ideas, feelings and moods throughout pretty much all human cultures that have ever existed, and it relies pretty much on balance.
Rayna Zemel has been working for major labels such as Atlantic Records alongside grammy winning artists and heavy weights of the music business. She currently teaches Audio Engineering and Music Production at The Los Angeles Recording School. Find out more about Rayna and read what people have been saying:
