Shaheen – “Rise” (Video)
Attacking bullying, consumerism, capitalism, and religion, Shaheen‘s song “Rise” asks his audience to rise above the system that oppresses them. The introspective rhythm tells a story of Shaheen’s childhood, bullied throughout school because he was different, and how miserable he felt because of it. Enlisting fellow South Windsor native producer/rapper Austin McGrady to direct, film and edit the video, it takes aim at multiple topics such as religious figures, politicians, and capitalists.
Introduced to music at the age of five, Shaheen began learning how to play the piano and took lessons until he was fourteen years old. In school, peers would mock Shaheen for listening and taking a huge interest in rap, with his soft personality and social anxiety. Eventually, listening was not enough for Shaheen and he wanted to become a part of it. Writing rhymes whenever he had the chance, an addiction emerged and by 2010, he purchased a microphone and set up a studio in his basement, recording verses over popular songs of the time as practice. He caught the attention from his hometown of South Windsor, CT when he released “Friend-Zone”, a comical song making fun of shallow women in American culture. In 2013, The UConn Daily Campus posted an article about Shaheen’s stance against bullying, rape, and his stance against social conservative groups. His music encourages his audience to “rise” above anything that might hold one back from their full potential and to think for themselves, and his lyrics will have you questioning the normal way of life, capitalism, religion, consumerism, and his music takes aim at conservative groups.
