Ugo (Boston, MA) – “Believe” ft. John Blackwell
Ugo (pronounced ‘you-go’) is a Hip-Hop and Rock group founded by Christopher Lee, Raymond Duplessis, and Josh Cohen.
The project, which officially launched in March 2014 via Kickstarter, began in 2007 while Lee and Duplessis attended West Essex High School in North Caldwell, New Jersey. The two quickly realized Duplessis’ rapping and production skills were a natural extension of Lee’s songwriting and vocals. When Lee moved to Boston in 2011 to attend Berklee College of Music, he met jazz-guitarist and composer Cohen, which added a completely new element to the already diverse sound. The group was solidified after Duplessis joined Lee and Cohen in Boston to begin working on their first EP.
The fusion, which seamlessly blends smooth vocals, hip-hop, and rock is unlike any other, creating an upbeat modern feel that rivals the likes of influences such as Jay Z, Miguel, and the Roots. The group is able to shed light on serious matters while remaining positive and inspirational. In addition, Ugo uses many elements of live instrumentation to complement their hip-hop production, which gives listeners an idea of what they’ll get at a live show.
Ugo, who just released their first single “Believe” featuring renowned drummer John Blackwell, is currently working on their first EP in Boston, Massachusetts with the help of Dan Cantor at Notable Productions.
