Q&A With Canadian Hip Hop Artist Buddah Abusah

Hey Buddah Abusah! We have always appreciated solid Canadian MC’s. Please tell me how long have you been rapping? Where specific area of CAN do you rep? Do you remember where you were at exactly when you wrote your first track!!??

I’ve been rapping since I was 11, but reeky started to take it serious when I was 16. I’m reaping Hamilton, Ontario Canada [905]. Man, first track I wrote and recorded was at my mommas house. My momma’s basement was a huge part of my growth as an artist.

Please!!! I mean please…. Please give you your take on the main differences between the US Underground Hip Hop scene compared to Canada’s underground Hip Hop scene. Unless you feel there is no difference?

To me there is no real difference now a days. Thanks to the internet, everyone is on a general platform right away. It’s just building brand awareness at this point. Although the US scene is obviously a lot bigger due to the massive population difference. Music lives where ever, forever.

Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences? Any Canadian influences? Was there anyone in your life that motivated your to STEP IT UP when it comes to making dope Hip Hop?

I grew up on 90’s hip hop and R&B. I love that shit. It reminds me of good vibes, real, genuine music with substance is what I love. I’m still influenced by the same thing, that will never change. I didn’t really listen to much Canadians growing up, because my sisters always played American R&B and hiphop, the majority of the times. Canada’s music scene is not nearly as big as the American scene but it is growing rapidly so don’t sleep!

To be real the person that made me accept the fact that you can rap and be yourself was Kanye West, during the College Dropout days. I was in junior high when the album dropped. I could relate to it because it was talking about school which is something I could relate to, rather than guns and hoes. The album was fire and listening to it opened my third eye. I was able to really find myself and start to do something with music and not be looked at or judged like that. If Ye can do, I can do it kinda mind state.

Please breakdown the creative process of your album Buddah’s EP.

It’s my expression. I have a lot more on my plate these days as a new father, partner, upcoming artist, and creating this whole new wave with my music and business. It was the right material for me to get off my mind. Dealing with some life situations that was getting me vex. So I expressed it and I wrote exactly what I felt. Some tracks are old, but I wrote all the tracks on the bus to and from work, that’s the first time I’ve ever done that.

Rappers nowadays think by throwing up a few videos up on social media and pushing quick projects, they can blow up overnight! Give us your view on how over saturated the market is right now with so many MC’s/Producers but not to many quality music.

Lol That’s the power of the internet. Anyone can make it, but since that’s what rappers do it becomes a popularity contest. Who has the most guns, drugs, bitches, cars, and lives the most luxurious. So is it saturation or is it popularity with what’s popping now? There are artists out there that have so much more to speak on than these rappers, but that’s the market. The market doesn’t care what we think, it is what it is and we all need to accept that.

Out the box type question, If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.

How you gunna ask me this!? Lol too many options. Only ALBUM I can choose would be Nas – iLLmatic. Arguably best rap album of all time. I’m not sure for underground hiphop though.

Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?

Music with substance, a message, a meaning, whether in speaking to the listener or storytelling, not on a mainstream platform.

I don’t want to go with the boom bap hiphop because times and sounds are changing and developing so in general I’ll say that.
