D.Mason (Dallas, TX) – Q&A Interview

D.MasonTell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?

I’m from Dallas,Tx…a small area called Oak Cliff to be exact…and I’ve been doing hip hop for a lil over 7 yrs now.It wasn’t untill around 2010 that I began to take the craft seriously and pursue a career in the industry.

What influences you in making Hip Hop?

My mood, finding strange and obscure samples, the weather, current events, and just needing to express myself and get things off of my chest really…

Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?

It’s always hard for me to really describe my music and put it into  words, but I’d say my music is emotionally driven, oddly melodic and experimental, but simple.

Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?

I just finished a track for a reality tv series with Adam Williams(akhordzproductions.com) a few days ago.Dizzy Wright,Paramount Pictures, Derek Lamb of Lambeau Productions, Spaceboifresh,JPZ,David Empy, Young Dexx and many more… I’ve been working on tracks for Freddie B(FB Stackz) this whole week. In the future I’d like to collaborate with the whole T.D.E. camp, more songwriters, Pharell,Lana del Rey, Lil Boosie,Jhene Aiko,Sade,Prince,HitBoy, Big Krit, J.Cole, -Topic, BB King, and soo many others lol.

Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Music made with no boundaries and full creative control.

Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production?  And who would you like to work with?

Prince,Pimp C,Johnny Juliano,Red One, Dr.Luke, Kanye West,Harry Fraud, Alchemist,The Neptunes, Owl City, EpikTheDawn,Ryan Leslie…and I’d like to work with all the above.

Any current or future projects you are promoting?

I’m working on my next EP entitled “Palm Trees” set for a summer release. It will be an album full of very smooth, airy r&b,along with those fun/chill nightlife kind of tracks. I’ll be doing 4-5 track EPs with different artist all this year.

Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of The A.R.I.D. EP? Also/ what was the idea or concept description about your Album Art Cover.

It all started with a conversation I had with a friend, about how many rappers harass producers for free beats, or what we call being “thirsty”… So I decided to make a free project full of  tracks with sounds and samples that have a very arid feel to them. I’m releasing them for free,in hopes that it will quench their undying thirst for free product. The cover art was done by Barry Shereshevsky.
