The Outsiders – Q&A Interview
Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?
The Outsiders consists of two emcees from Provo, Utah. Tony Carly who goes by KoalaT(quality) and Walter Campos who goes by Forawx. We’ve been making hip hop as a duo since 2008.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
Life. Easy as that. We were both brought up on 90s hip hop. TheGolden era of the art. We’re just trying to get it back where it belongs.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?
Our music just comes from a place that’s real, a place that your everyday jane/joe can relate to and that’s what separates us, that level of realness of life that we translate through music. We’re not trying to fit in or stand out. We just wanna relate and get you bobbin your head.
Who have you collaborated with? Who would you like to collab with in the near future?
No collabs as of yet, just focusing on establishing our own style first. Creating our own sound/voice/following.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
Anything not mainstream obviously. It’s such a huge, diverse genre to be placed in, but I typically associate Underground Hip Hop with artists or groups that aren’t conforming to pop culture. Kinda going against the grain of what’s popular. I do see a lot of good things coming up in the mainstream now tho. Kendrick, Cole ect.. So the perspective is changing a little
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
So many influences. Obviously Dilla and 9th Wonder but Production’s such a huge part of Hip Hop and any music really. With Soundcloud and other sites like that we find influence from a ton of different producers right now. I think our favorite that we’ve worked with directly is a local producer who goes by the name of SLYbeats. Dudes crazy talented. But we’re open to work with anyone really, not many restrictions. Just as long as its good music
Any current or future projects you are promoting?
As far as promotion goes our main Focus is with The Outsiders Volume 1 project right now. We just finished that one up in Feb, but we’ve got another project that we’ll be dropping hopefully by the end of May that will be absolutely crazy. It’s got a real laid back summertime type vibe, so we’re real excited about that.
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of The Outsiders – Volume 1? Also/ tell us a little bit about the concept and idea behind your Album/Mixtape Cover Art.
The whole creative process was a ton of fun. We just wanted to let everyone into the style of hip hop we like to make and listen to. Kinda gives it an old school vibe. The artwork is actually a picture of downtown provo from back in like the 70s or something like that, but it’ the city we live in. It’s the city we met at back when we went to school together at Independence High School. So we just wanted to give it a sense of nostalgia, kind of make a statement that we’re here and repping our home town.
Where can we find your music and info?
Our soundcloud page primarily. You can hit up the facebook page as well as our bandcamp.
